Vanish
by
Tess Gerritsen
Thelynx
, June 16, 2007
Vanish ? Tess Gerritsen. The book begins with two equally compelling stories. In the first, a narrator relates her own personal horror of being ushered across the US Boarder in hope of a better life. Betrayed, she --along with other young girls -- are sold to be raped and beaten daily. In a separate chapter, a frozen body, presumed dead, is revived by a medical examiner after the "corpse" opens her eyes. The ?Jane Doe? thanks her ?rescuer? by taking her and others hostage. The terrified party inlcudes a woman police officer about to give birth. As the tale flips between the two stories, this five star book will make it utterly impossible to do anything else but read to the conclusion. 401 pages *****

Sleeping With Fear
by
Kay Hooper
Thelynx
, June 16, 2007
Sleeping with Fear, Kay Hooper. Imagine waking up, covered in blood, with no memory of the previous night or the past three weeks. Then add the fact you learn you?re involved in a heated romance and no memory of it or no idea whether your new lover knows about the crime. To complicate matters, our heroine (Special Agent Riley Crane) has relied on extra sensitive powers to guide her through her work; just like her memories, she finds that they too are absent. Do not start this book until you have time to devote to its full reading. It is captivating. 350 pages (Suspense/Thriller) ***

Thelynx

From Binge to Blackout: A Mother and Son?s Struggle with Teen Drinking ? Chris Volkmann & Toren Volkman: 410 pages. This is a well-written and thoughtful account of a family?s battle with teen alcoholism. Chapters are divided by first-person narratives detailing the story of Toern Volkman?s discovery that he is an alcoholic and efforts to conquer this devastating and misunderstood disease. Toren offers a thoughtful and lively account of his internal struggle. Chapters written by Toren?s mother, Chris, offer a viewpoint of a parent?s attempt to comprehend what has happened and if it could have been prevented. While a highly personal story, this story is also a resource that will assist readers understand the universal threats of alcoholism, signs of problems, and how the devastating consequences of this disease can be met. I highly recommend this informative and sympathetic book. (Non Fiction/Autobiography) ****

Second Sight
by
Amanda Quick
Thelynx
, April 10, 2007
Second Sight, Janyne Ann Krentz, (Writing as Amanda Quick) Set in the Victorian Age, this captivating book begins as ancient artifacts are photographed, for a secret society, by a single woman. Knowing her romantic prospects are bleak, due to her age and financial burden of caring for her family robbed of their inheritance, our protagonist seduces a man to experience one night of passion. Imagine her surprise when she reads a death notice that would mean he died that very night in a fire. Feigning to be his widow, she assumes his last name and moves her family to London to open a photo gallery. It is her belief that she will be better accepted in the Victorian business world if she is believed to be a widow with a tragic tale. Her second shock comes when she reads that her “husband” has awakened from amnesia and has just arrived in London to resume life with his bride. Little does she know that her ruse could kill her and the family she seeks to protect. This pranormal, romantic, adventure is hard to stop reading.

Sleeping With The Fishes Fred the Mermaid 01
by
Maryjanice Davidson
Thelynx
, April 05, 2007
Sleeping with the Fishes – Mary Janice Davidson. Although much more could be done with the premise, this is still an easy and sometimes humorous story of a mermaid (Dr. Fredrika Bimm) trying to live life as “one of us.” Her previously, unexceptional existence becomes complicated when a mer prince visits and asks her to help him learn who is polluting the Boston Harbor. This request is also made, of her, at work by a visiting attractive scientist. The slender, green-haired marine biologist, subsequently finds herself sought after by the two men as they all try to unearth the mystery of how toxins are ravaging marine life. The last portion seems to contrived and somewhat cliche – cheapening what promised to be a better book. All in all, it is a fun read. (Paranormal adventure)

Adventures of the Little Wooden Horse
by
Ursula Moray Williams
Thelynx
, March 24, 2007
Adventures of the Little Wooden Horse â Ursula Moray Williams. Fantastic childrenâs story by the writer of Gobolino the Witchâs Cat, my childhood favorite. While it has taken me over 30 years to discover this classic, it was worth the wait and instilled many of the same emotions stirred by Gobbolino. Both lovable characters are loyal and unlucky. Despite both characters adventures, both are merely driven by love and the desire for a simple home. I read this book in one sitting and felt like a child again. --worrying and hoping it would end happily. Ursula Moray Williams has a real gift for creating heartwarming stories with characters you will never forget â no matter how many years pass. Over 30 years may have passed but it was worth the wait, and I felt like the same little girl who discovered this classic while in England as a child. 256 pages. (Childrenâs/Fantasy)
