This series is one of my favorites. These are probably the funniest books I've ever read and appropriate for all ages. My 35 yr old sister recommended them to me, and at 28 I enjoyed them so I much I had my mom and 12 year old sister read them also and now we are all hooked.

Kangaroo Notebook

This is one of the strangest and most interesting books I have ever read ( with the exception of Haruki Murakami's novels). It is like a fever dream that keeps getting wierder and wierder. I absolutely love this book but still have trouble eating sprouts because of it.

Life of Pi

One of my favorite books even though the first 50 pages are slow going. Most people I know couldn't get past the first part of the book but it is well worth it. A boy trapped on a life boat with exotic animals such as a hyena and a tiger. It kept me on the edge of my seat right up til the end.

Inside the Victorian Home A Portrait of Domestic Life in Victorian England
by

This book was so well researched and interesting I did not skip over any information, each chapter was full of obscure facts. No other book I've encountered provides such a comprehensive view of daily life in Victorian England.

Incredibly detailed and very interesting. I did not skip over any chapters in this book as every topic she covered was of interest. No other book provides such an all encompassing view of life in Victorian England.

Heart Shaped Box

I expected something good from Stephen King's son and I wasn't let down. Joe Hill's writing style and sense of humor are similar to King's but his sense of horror is a little more modern. This book scared the crap out of me and I have not been scared by a King novel in years.

Sharp Objects
by
Gillian Flynn

A reporter returns to her hometown to investigate the murder of two young girls and is reminded of why she left. Almost every inch of her body covered in scars from words she cut into her skin when she was younger. She returns to find her mother as unforgiving as ever, her classmates all suburban housewives and her younger sister is not what she seems to be. This book is so good I read it in two days and while I was not reading, it was all I could think about. The characters are well written and the plot keeps you wondering through the whole book. A couple passages were so unnerving I found myself unable to grimace as I was reading them. This book is horrifying, gripping and engrossing. One of the best books I've read in years.

Being Dead
by
Jim Crace

, April 18, 2007
Being Dead is an incredibly original tale of a husband and wife who are murdered on a visit to the beach. Over the course of the next few days the story progresses switching from images of the bodies disintegrating in the sand dunes to telling us the history of their relationship and the events leading up to their death. An amazing book (though graphic at times) that is a little bit "crime scene investigation" and a little bit love story.

Strange Piece of Paradise
by
Terri Jentz

, April 03, 2007
As a fan of true crime I found the author's descriptions of her attack almost too intense. Reading true crime from a first person point of view is very different and more disturbing than from an outsider's point of view. I could not get the images she described of the axeman attacking her in her tent out of my head for days and can't imagine what sort of strength she must've had to cope with that trauma. I did find it frustrating though that she waits until quite a ways into the book to let us know what exactly happened to her. Instead of feeling suspense I was getting annoyed halfway through. It is a bit of a tedious read but I read it one year ago and it still has stuck with me.

Ya Yas In Bloom
by
Rebecca Wells

I was very dissapointed, expecting this book to be as charming as her previous two novels. I found Ya-Yas in Bloom to be tedious and annoying. The tales she tells of the ya yas lives came out as cheesy and unbelievable. I could barely finish the book and just skimmed the last 20 pages.

Liseys Story
by
Stephen King
lydiav
, March 25, 2007
Stephen King's latest is a touching and creepy love story in the same spirit as "Bag of Bones", my personal King favorite. King's stories have gone downhill in the past decade but I felt this story made up for it. This novel made me laugh, cry and be afraid to go to sleep. I could not put down this intensely horrifying yet sweet tale of the love between a man who is haunted by his past and the woman who stood by him.

Dr Tatianas Sex Advice to All Creation
by

An incredibly entertaining book explaining the evolutionary reasons behind the different sex practices of various obscure members of the animal kingdom. This book explains many biological principles in layman's terms using the pretext of a "Dear Abby" type column. As a former biology student I found this book to be very informative but also easy to read and amusing.
