Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Canine and Feline Behavior for Veterinary Technicians and Nurses

Packed with information - real, scientific information - about dog and cat behavior. This is a textbook for veterinary technicians, but is also a superb reference for serious dog and cat people, and a must for professional dog and cat trainers. Contains lots of illustrations and diagrams that truly explain and lists references for those who want to dig deeper. Four paws up!

Darling Buds of May

Adventures of an unconventional rural English family set in the 1950's. Humorous and uplifting as Wodehouse, often politically incorrect but charming anyway. I seem to end up reading it every summer. It was a series on PBS some years ago - Catharine Zeta-Jone played the oldest daughter.

Plenty in Life Is Free Reflections on Dogs Training & Finding Grace
by
Kathy Sdao
Positive Dog
, April 18, 2012
Short but pithy book about animal training and the author's quest for a state of grace. Kathy Sdao clearly describes why training is best seen as a two-way street and why plenty in life should be free. There is a lot of practical advice as well as thoughtful reflection on the human/animal bond. The title is a deliberate reversal of the popular "Nothing in Life is Free" mindset which advocates coercion and control at all costs.

Wildwood: The Wildwood Chronicles, Book I
by

Great action story for young and old alike. Takes place in an alternative Portland where Forest Park is a fantastic noman's land with talking animals and dark enchantments. Is anyone doing a Wildwood tour yet? Possibilities for that and a sequel abound.
