Powell's Staff:
Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

White Sands Experiences from the Outside World
by
Geoff Dyer

Vacation didn't live up to expectations? Here's Geoff Dyer in White Sands on his trip to see the Northern Lights: "We had had the experience of a lifetime but it was not the experience that we had hoped for: it was like a lifetime of disappointment compressed into less than a week, which actually felt like it had lasted the best -- in the worst sense -- part of a lifetime." However much I would like to agree with anyone with the good taste to recommend Dyer, I have to quibble with Shawn D from Powell's who characterizes Dyer as "as the official spokesman for Generation X." Dyer is in his fifties having been, like myself, born in the late 50's and so is at least a generation too late for Gen X. That, as far as I'm concerned, speaks even more highly for him as the Gen X spokesperson crowd includes such whiny bores as Douglas Copeland.

Black Lamb & Grey Falcon A Journey Through Yugoslavia

I can't believe I let this book sit on my shelf unread for so many years. Ok, maybe its length is intimidating. And to be honest, I am only halfway through. But what a great read on so many levels: journalism, history, and literature. I am marking passages worth coming back to, and am finding them throughout.

Snow
by
Orhan Pamuk

Pamuk's Snow manages to both make literary art and address the contemporary issue of fundamentalism and terrorism, and the reaction to it by secular society. For all of that, it is a very individual story, and you feel yourself drawn into it in a very intimate way.
