Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. It's rare that I finish a book & immediately recommend it to others - this is one of the few. Juliet works a dead-end job at a motel. A visit from a former friend cracks open Juliet's awareness of herself. Slowly she is able to see things youth & envy hid from her, & re-frame the ache of high school into something that is more glorious & far more painful. A mystery that reads like a novel, this book is on my Top-5 list for the year.

Demon Catchers of Milan

I struggled a bit with the beginning of this book, as the author dumps us immediately into a case of possession by a demon without any information about how or why such a thing is possible. But the protagonist also has no idea why her world suddenly contains such strange events, and as we follow her path things begin to become clear. As the book continues we learn about Mia and her extended family, about demons and spirits, and other such things, and we are drawn into the tale. Mia displays courage and grit in some frightening situations, and keeps challenging herself on many fronts. By the time I finished the book (having read it in as few sittings as my life allowed), I was intrigued and impressed. This is the first book of a trilogy. While it is complete in and of itself the pacing and plot reflect that there will be Further Developments. The next book will be out later in 2014, and the 3rd book of the trilogy is in progress. I look forward to finding out what happens!
