Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Terroryaki

Jennifer Chung has wrought a miracle in her 3 Day Novel contest winning tale! The challenge to write a novel in three days is a hefty one; Ms. Chung succeeds! Interwoven in her tale of 20-something indecision, familial unrest, and teriyaki restaurant work is a bizarre mobile teriyaki van. Haunted? Crazy? Fun? All of the above! The brief 122 pages will make you hungry for more of Chung's writing!

Fool
by
Christopher Moore

Christopher Moore is the reigning king of alternative paranormal comedy. I don't know what else to call his writing genre. In "Fool" Mr. Moore takes us into a world of Shakespeare in a tale told from the perspective of King Leer's court jester. Multiple Bard dramas find a nod here. The constant is Moore's ability to turn even the most serious material into laughter, the medicine of the soul. Join Pocket in his journey of creating war, shagging princesses, and thumbing his nose at royalty and aristocracy...in a fun way! (Warning: as the author claims, this is indeed a tale with mature themes and language.)

Night Circus
by
Erin Morgenstern

Morgenstern took me for a ride that I didn't want to end. With the finesse of an accomplished juggler she tossed me into the tents to share magic, friendship, love, and treachery as her characters spun through selfless and selfish acts. I wanted the magic to continue when the final page turned. I'll read and reread this enchanting tale. Like the patrons of the Night Circus, there will always be new tents and wonders to explore.
