Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey
by
Buck, Rinker
catvet

I just finished a great book. Rinker Buck has not only told a great story of a modern adventure in a country that long ago closed its frontiers...but still has many of the perils the pioneers experienced. We may have found ways to bypass the obstacles, but if we slow down to see the world step by step as previous generations saw it, we can still see the world they saw in many cases. I learned from this book, and I have read many books on the American west, pioneers, native Americans, harness driving of draft animals, and the geology of our continent, but this book put all those elements together in time, place and context....and made me feel like we were able to get a whole new look at a subject area many would say has been already covered. Not by a long shot! This is a fresh perspective on a theme that has literally developed its own myths and legends which influence our daily lives. If you like travel writers...if you like some American history and the west, and if you like reading about the bonding that occurs between a team of draft animals and their drivers...this is a great read. I happened to read much of it while on the road travelling sections of the Oregon trail..and his voice rings true for every mile of it.

Cat Getting Out of a Bag & Other Observations
by

If you are looking for a book that is filled with witticisms and punchlines, this book is likely to disappoint you. If you are looking for a thread of commonality between species that brings it's own laughs through the sheer joy of the simple pleasures we find in observation...then you will like this book. Its vignettes read like Zen over and over again.
