Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Faith Under Fire An Army Chaplains Memoir
by
Roger Benimoff
lmcgee
, August 07, 2009
Faith Under Fire: An Army Chaplain's Memoir is the story of Roger Benimoff, who spent two tours of duty in Iraq as an Army chaplain. His faith is severely tested by the horrors of war. Returning home, he discovers that he is suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. It has given me a much better understanding of what our brave men & women go through in Iraq and Afghanistan. My thanks to all military personnel for everything they have done for me and our country.

When the Heart Waits Spiritual Direction for Lifes Sacred Questions
by
Kidd, Sue Monk
lmcgee
, July 16, 2008
Sue Monk Kidd writes about her midlife spiritual crisis when everything around her had lost its meaning. She found that there was no easy or quick fix; she needed to engage in contemplative waiting. She compares this process to the life span of a butterfly -- how it must first spend time in its cocoon before emerging as a beautiful butterfly. I began to understand that I have been in a period of contemplative waiting for many years. Years in which nothing seemed to happen. But I know that God has been using this waiting period to refine me. Reading this book gave me the strength move forward.

Here If You Need Me A Memoir
by
Kate Braestrup
lmcgee
, May 22, 2008
This is the heart-warming story of Kate Braestrup, who is the chaplain for the Maine Warden Service. The one quote from the book that sums it all up is: "...I have a job that mostly requires me to just show up, shut my mouth, and be." This is the essence of what Kate does so well and what we all should do when someone is in need. God bless you, Kate, for what you do.

Ghost Map The Story of Londons Most Terrifying Epidemic & How It Changed Science Cities & the Modern World
by
Steven Johnson
lmcgee
, September 05, 2007
"The Ghost Map" is the fascinating story of the 1854 cholera epidemic in London. It tells how the epidemic started, and how two men, Dr. John Snow and Reverend Henry Whitehead solved the riddle of how cholera spread throughout sections of London. This book is exceptionally well-written and deserves the Pulitzer Prize.

Pope Joan
by
Donna Woolfol Cross
lmcgee
, June 29, 2007
This fascinating book tells the story about a ninth century woman, Joan, who passed herself off as a man in order to receive an education. In doing so, she became a Benedictine monk, a priest, and eventually, Pope John VIII. Did Joan exist? Did she become Pope? I don't know the answers to these questions. But I do know that Joan is a role model and inspiration for all women.

Leaving Church A Memoir Of Faith
by
Barbara Brown Taylor
lmcgee
, October 25, 2006
"Leaving Church: A Memoir of Faith" is one woman's quest for faith. But it is also everyone's quest for faith, regardless of our church denomination. Barbara Brown Taylor's experiences remind us that God is everywhere, not just in a church.
