It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Waterloo The History of Four Days Three Armies & Three Battles
by
Bernard Cornwell
Amy Houchen
, October 13, 2015
Cornwell says that like all good stories, the story of Waterloo bears repetition--but that should mean the story as a whole. Unfortunately he repeats little bits of it, sometimes more than once in a few pages. This book could have been much shorter and still been a good short rendering of the battles.

This is the best book I've ever read on parenting teens--I've lost count of how many copies I've given away to other parents.

by
Elizabeth Wa Fernea

Although this book was written more than forty years ago, it's still very much worth reading for its perspective on the life of women in an traditional village in Iraq.

When You Lunch with the Emperor The Adventures of Ludwig Bemelmans
by
Ludwig Bemelmans

The cover blurb, by Anthony Bourdain, says "Always funny." I kept waiting for the funny parts, but found it at most mildly interesting. Perhaps one must be in the hospitality industry to find all the humor. I expected better from the author of Madeleine.

Enchanted Castle
by
E Nesbit, Zelinsky
Amy Houchen
, January 02, 2009
Delightful and surprising fantasy--it's worn very well in a century. Not just an enchanted castle, but a magic ring, dinosaurs that move, a princess, secret passages, and more. And it's not just for kids--adults will enjoy it, too, and writers will learn quite a bit about their craft.
