Heart of a Samurai

This book deserves all the praise it is receiving. It is a "biographical novel" disguised as a page turning adventure story. I had a hard time putting this book down. Manjiro is a fascinating character only made more complex when you find out this novel is based on a true story. No matter what he faces violence, hunger, prejudice, he does it with dignity and much can be learned from him. Preus is a great storyteller and there were many times I was grateful Manjiro's story was in such capable hands. This is a book that is enjoyable for all, young and old. It would be a great choice to read aloud because the action would keep everyone's attention. This was a fantastic and exciting book.

I hand this book out like candy. No matter who I hand it to, they end up loving it. It is funny, warm, heart breaking at moments; but, ultimately, the purest breath of fresh air. And hopeful. Did I mention that it is hopeful? Just brilliant. One of those books you wish you could read over and over like it was the first time. If you haven't read it, you are missing out.

Claire DeWitt and the City of the Dead

I really loved this book. It's the beginning to a series. And while it has a darkness similar to her other novels, the quirkiness lightens and enriches the story. I can not wait for the next book. I seek out these literary, smart alecky mystery series. I love Gabriel Cohen's Jack Leightner novels because the detective is thoughtful and surprising. Charlie Huston's The Mystic Arts of Erasing All Signs of Death comes to mind. Claire DeWitt is part addict, part unstable grouch, part mystic truth finder and part guru follower. She is the World's Greatest Detective back in a post Katrina New Orleans to find a client's uncle. The gritty setting is perfectly depicted by the talented Sara Gran. Call it noir, call it whatever you want. Claire DeWitt is a welcome addition to the crowded mystery field which is frequently lacking in solid, good storytelling.
