Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Last Train From Hiroshima
by
Charles Pellegrino
Michael Riley
, February 10, 2010
I am not a fan of World War Two history books. But after hearing the author talk on a radio show of his research, I decided to give Last Train to Hiroshima a chance. This book is probably one of the finest arguments against the use of nuclear weapons ever written. The author does not take sides, he merely tells what he learned through various interviews and research. It is a powerful book full of imagery that at times is disturbing. If anything, I found the book to be a little too descriptive in places. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the details of those days in August 1945 when the nuclear bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Pellegrino does a fantastic job detailing the events immediately before, during and after each city was destroyed.

Bonk The Curious Coupling of Science & Sex
by
Roach, Mary
Michael Riley
, May 11, 2008
If you liked Mary Roach's Stiff and Spook, you're gonna love Bonk. Bonk covers areas of a topic that is near and dear to probably all of us. Of course, we're talking about sex. Roach's style of writing draws you into an arena of clinical discussions and humor about this topic. I found myself laughing out loud at points in the book while also thinking "so that's why that happens" in other points. I highly recommend this fun read to anyone (within the age of consent.)

I used to read this book to my son when he was a toddler. It's a great bedtime book. My son is now a teenager and every so often as we're saying goodnight, one of us will say a phrase from Goodnight Moon. I highly recommend this book to anyone who reads bedtime stories to their young children.
