Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Ghost Ship
by
Desmond Harrington

This film has one of the best beginnings of any horror film to date. The first 10 or so minutes of the film are worth watching the entire film for. Unfortunately, when Ghost Ship arrives at its "exciting conclusion", the film falls into the craptrap that most of Hollywood seems to be stuck in. Still... The beginning... damn!

Ursula

Ursula is a very charming story of two who fall in love long before they can fully conceive what love is exactly. This book is rich with mythology, and I'm not clear how much of it is historical and how much comes from the mind of its authors. It took me a few pages to break through the chaos of what was occuring, but once I did, I found a truly wonderful story that pulled a lot of the same heart strings as [a]Craig Thompson[/a]'s wonderful book, [t]Goodbye, Chunky Rice[/t].

Oddville

I work in a bookstore, and I can't see the words Oni Press, without picking up the title to have a peak. What a fun and quick read Oddville turned out to be. With an utter lack of focus, Oddville seems like the daydreams of a person afflicted with A.D.D. I look forward to seeking out more of [a]Jay Stephens[/a]' creations.

A truly beautiful film. However, the voices are often difficult to hear and understand.

Alone in the Dark
by
Christian Slater

They said he was the next [kw]Jack Nicholson[/kw]. _They_ are always passing us tripe for fact. Alone in the Dark was probably the first survival-horror video game to hit the market, and likely remains one of the best (despite its graphical shortcomings). However, this crapbomb of a film seems to have no relation to the video game it's based on. In fact, this film is so bad, I shut it off in the middle of a sex scene between [kw]Christian Slater[/kw] and [kw]Tara Reid[/kw]. This movie will kill a party faster than Reid's publicist, Lizzy Grubman.

When did [kw]Christian Slater[/kw] become a cut-rate actor destined to straight to DVD releases like [t]Alone in the Dark[/t]? His last film was so bad I shut it off in the middle of a sex scene. Do yourself a favor and pass this one up.

Ninja Scroll: 10TH Anniversary Special Edition
by
Yoshiaki Kawajiri
zyrowan
, March 17, 2006
Ninja Scroll follows the tale of Jubei Kibagami, a ninja who seems predestined to destroy evil in the world. Along his journey he encounters a clan of powerful demons led by his former nemesis, Gemma, who is bent on overthrowing the government and taking over the world. Perhaps one of the best anime features of all time, this film is ninety minutes of what everyone hopes an anime will be. The content is certainly graphic at times, but well worth every bit. If you've seen the [t]Animatrix[/t] then you are unwittingly familiar with [a]Yoshiaki Kawajiri[/a]'s work. Do yourself a favor and pick up a DVD that should be in any true anime fan's collection.
