Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Sams Teach Yourself Java 6 in 21 Days 5th Edition

I am a beginning programmer. I've done very little javascript work along with my web design background. The main problems I'm finding with the book is that it spends much time explaining the logic behind java, which I find very simple to grasp, and very little on the technical aspect of java. The first instance of this is when creating the first program in the book it spends no time at all explaining how to compile the file, where I ended searching, and looking through some forums to make it work. Also the First Chapter's activities at the end ask you to create 2 programs of which as a beginning programmer, I had no idea where to start. And finally, there are errors in the code that I my self am picking up, which can't be good. The other problem is that the errors also persist in the online and disk files. So needless to say, java being a relatively easy programing language to learn, has become a frustrating experience. I really wish I had known this before walking out with it. The intro seemed promising, and in the end is now something I'm determined to get through, as opposed to trying to learn java. It does have some redeeming qualities, it's tables are good for referring back to things, and it leaves definitions very apparent by putting the defined word in italics. So hopefully I'll make it through.
