Lucky Us

Amy Bloom spins quite a tale in Lucky Us. A very well-written, plot-driven novel set in the 1940s, with a narrator who is somewhat of a foil for all the various and sundry characters who gather around her, including her starlet sister, her ne'er do-well father, and a somewhat surprising young man. A fast read, as the pace of the plot keeps moving consistently.

Every Day Is for the Thief
by
Teju Cole

A natural progression from Cole's debut novel, Open City, which took the reader on a walking tour of New York City, this book describes the unnamed Nigerian-American narrator's trip back to Lagos. Purportedly a fictional account, the book reads somewhat like nonfiction. Cole brings present-day Lagos to life through encounters with people and places, for example, a brief glimpse of a young woman reading on a bus. A very worthwhile read.
