Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

American Elsewhere

Order this book NOW! Or dash to your nearest Powell's and plunk down your cash! This is my favorite kind of novel...one you can get lost within. Bennett has created a terrific SF...horror...fantasy. It appears to hark back to Lovercraftian lore...but it's much more. Great characters...great locales...and writing that is skin-crawlingly scary and splashed with surprising humor. Wonderful plotting that keeps the story driving on to the inevitable explosive otherworldly climax. I really don't know how to classify this book. Is it SF? Is it supernatural? The big picure is: It doesn't matter. Just great adventure creation by an author who just gets better with each new work.

Return Man

Run, Shamble, Crawl...to get this book NOW! Zombie fiction is hit 'n' miss BUT The Return Man nails the genre dead center! Mr. Zito is obviously a huge horror fan and his deftly crafted, seat-of-your-pants "zombie breakout" story is the BEST ZOMBIE fiction I've ever read. As an fx dude who's worked in horror SPFX for over a dozen years...I'm easily jaded with most zombie fiction. The Return Man is top notch adventure horror! Even the "zombie" science has some REAL research behind it. BUY THIS BOOK!

Shock Value How a Few Eccentric Outsiders Gave Us Nightmares Conquered Hollywood & Invented Modern Horror
by
Jason Zinoman
John Foster
, September 01, 2011
Shock Value is a well-written history of the "New Horror" and it's directors, writers, and producers. Jason Zinoman has done his research...(I saw this from the perspective of working in the SPFX makeup industry for a dozen years during the '80's and '90's...I was there...so I DO know the history of many genre films). Anyone who loves film regardless of genre should read this book. Wes Craven, John Carpenter, O'Bannon, De Palma...they're all here of course. But the author traces other not so famous filmmakers who made important contributions. Very thoughtful, candid and even funny at times. A wealth of recent horror film history. Come on buy this one...and be the life of any horror film history discussion!
