Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

The Elegance of the Hedgehog
by
Muriel Barbery

, January 01, 2012
I've read some fine books this past year, but The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery ranks at the top for Barbery's timeless commentary on life, books, grammar (as an editor I couldn't help but laugh out loud at her take on poor punctuation) and, of course, relationships of all strip. When a book calls to you for a re-read, you know it's superior.

My favorite kid's book of all time. I could -- and did -- read this book a hundred times over. Every new parent friend gets Dogzilla and the nearly equally funny Kat Kong because we parents deserve some entertainment at storytime too.

Final Solution A Story of Detection
by
Michael Chabon
Mary Edwards
, March 11, 2010
My first Michael Chabon book and I loved it -- from the lengthy, richly detailed sentences to the deft characterizations. And being a Sherlock Holmes fan, I loved the what-if aspect of the esteemed detective's much later years. I'm moving on to The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay and pushing this one on the friends and book groupies who want something short, but sweet.
