It took me a little while to settle in to this book with its truncated prose. It felt like the narrator was relating thought fragments, but that quickly felt natural. I mean, who always thinks in complete sentences? I was soon drawn in and swept away by this nitty-gritty yet poetic account of survival in a post-apocalyptic world (most people decimated by a huge flu epidemic) that begins at a small airport outside of Denver, Colorado. Hig is a pilot with the soul of a poet, and, when the story begins, has survived so far with the help and advice of a grizzled, deadly survivalist who showed up at the airport hauling a trailer full of weapons a few years earlier. Hig monitors the perimeter of their defensible space by flying patrols in a small plane, accompanied by his beloved dog, Jasper. He and his sort-of buddy, Bangley, have fended off small groups of invaders that have dwindled over the years but are still considered a daily threat. One day, a few years previously, Hig was astonished to hear a transmission from an airport miles away while he was flying a routine patrol. There is no answer to his repeated replies, but the idea that there are others out there has stuck with him. After a heart-rending event changes how he feels about his circumscribed but relatively safe life, Hig decides to embark upon a risky quest to find out what is happening at that airport, which leads him to an encounter unlike anything he'd imagined possible. I enjoyed learning, in bits and pieces, Hig's backstory and the unfolding of the end of the world. As his deeper feelings and experiences are revealed, Hig becomes a nuanced, deeply human character that you just have to care about and root for. The exquisite pace, language and character development make this an unforgettable story that I could not put down and wished would never end.

I was wary of this book at first, expecting total doom and gloom. But I was quickly drawn in by the achingly human elements of the characters, who experienced bizarre events and somehow coped as best they could, though not in normally expected ways. A must-read if you enjoy well-written literary mysteries.
