Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Station Eleven

Emily St John Mandel

It's hard to put into words how good this novel is. Having read an earlier work (The Singer's Gun) I knew to expect a fine book, but didn't know where this new one would take me, or how high it would place her on my ever-growing list of favorite authors. Flawless storytelling, seamless time tripping, intoxicating, brilliant, & spectacular are all adequate descriptions of this little book. If this one doesn't put Emily St. John Mandel on the map, someone is sleeping.

Happiness Is a Chemical in the Brain Stories
by
Lucia Perillo

Lucia Perillo has already won (& broken) our hearts through her poetry, but now she takes it up a notch, blossoming into a flawless collection of incredible short stories. This collection is raw, yet so polished it reflects pieces of you can relate to in every entry. Not since Donald Ray Pollock's Knockemstiff has a gathering of stories packed themselves into one such powerful punch.
