Jesus, Calm My Heart: 365 Prayers to Give You Peace at the Close of Every Day
by
Ruth Schwenk
Linda Preiss
, December 01, 2023
“Jesus, Calm my Heart” is a beautifully written book of daily prayers. Each prayer addresses a specific topic that people can use prayer for. Ruth does a lovely job of writing out prayers to help others through tough times! If you follow Ruth on social media, you can tell she really has a heart for God and helping those around her. This book can be used in one of two ways. It can be read daily for 365 days; or search the Table of Contents for a specific situation you find yourself in and go directly to that prayer. If you find yourself in a tough situation and don’t know what to pray, this is a wonderful place to start! I was given an advanced reading copy for an honest opinion of the book.

An Abundant Place: Daily Retreats for the Woman Who Can't Get Away
by
Kathi Lipp and Cheri Gregory
Linda Preiss
, January 06, 2022
Almost everyone woman I know – especially moms of kids at home – wishes they could get a break for a bit. They love being a mom, wife, daughter, grandmother, employee, etc., but they would really enjoy a bit of time away to relax, rest and focus on themselves for a while. Of course, leaving home and actually going away can be difficult. Whether it is time, money, logistics actually leaving isn’t always feasible. And here is where this book comes in! Kathi and Cheri write beautiful, faith-filled devotionals that give you a few moments to escape and have a bit of time for yourself and God, without actually leaving home. The subtitle of the book says it all – “Daily Retreats for the Woman Who Can’t Get Away.” They tell wonderful stories, ask pointed questions, and give you space to write your thoughts (if you are so inclined to write in books.) I highly recommend this book if you feel you really could use a break, and can’t we all? I was given an advanced reading copy of “An Abundant Place” by Kathi Lipp and Cheri Gregory for an honest review of the book.

Make Their Day: 101 Simple, Powerful Ways to Love Others Well
by
Karen Ehman
Linda Preiss
, January 29, 2021
Karen Ehman enjoys spreading kindness to those around her – and wouldn’t the world be a better place if we all did that? Make Their Day is basically a book of lists – ways to make someone’s day a little brighter, a little easier, a little more fun. The subtitle says it better – “101 simple, powerful ways to love others well.” Karen gives you 101 ways to spread love and kindness to those around you. The book is broken down into groupings: In Your Circle of Friends, Within Your Own Family, Across the Miles or through the Screen and others. Some ideas are very simple like buying coffee for a friend or writing someone a handwritten note about how much they mean to you. Others are more elaborate and would take more planning – like planning a slumber party for you and your friends or creating a snack station at your office so people can stop by for a quick pick-me-up. I’d like to say the ideas are endless, but truly there are 101 of them – but they can spark a person’s creativity to come up with some of their own ideas too. I really enjoyed this book and the ideas Karen shared! I hope to encourage my family to spread kindness now and throughout the new year. If you are tired of all the negativity and anger going around in the world today, get this book and follow the suggestions to bring more love and kindness to those around you. Maybe it will start a movement!

Shadows of the White City
by
Jocelyn Green
Linda Preiss
, January 29, 2021
Shadows of the White City is book two in the Windy City Saga by Jocelyn Green. It is a historical fiction book set during the World’s Fair in Chicago in the late 1800’s. It is a continuation of the story of the Townsend family from Veiled in Smoke. The exhaustive research that Jocelyn does allows her to writing to be so full of details that the story becomes truly immersive. The buildings almost appeared in my vision as it was being described by the guides and I felt like I was walking through the midway as she was describing it. I highly recommend this book. The hope that sprung out of the first book, Veiled in Smoke, continues here, even when things don’t always go as expected. The characters are so real I want to be friends with them and, even though I know that they are fictional and it is not possible, I walked away feeling like I am. I was given an advance reading copy of Shadows of the White City by Jocelyn Green for honest feedback of the book.

Reach Out, Gather in: 40 Days to Opening Your Heart and Home
by
Karen Ehman
Linda Preiss
, October 29, 2020
“Reach Out Gather In” is more than a non-fiction book to teach you hospitality. It is a 40-day journey to understanding hospitality and what that really means. If you think Hospitality means setting a Pinterest perfect table, decorations that rival Macy’s and food straight out of a magazine, then this book will change your mindset. Karen Ehman breaks hospitality down into 8 areas, none of which expect you to be perfect. Not to mention, this book isn’t about becoming a Martha Stewart, but about the people you meet in daily life. Karen infuses the book with Bible verses, prayers, things to ponder in your own life and recipes. There truly is more to this book than just decorating your home and making prize worthy pies. It is about meeting people where they are and showing them the love of Christ – which may or may not include a homemade meal. I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels led to reach out to others but feels inadequate because they don’t feel like they are the perfect host. Most people don’t want to be invited in only if your house is spotless and not lived in. They wanted to be included just the way they are. I was given an advanced reading copy of this book for an honest review of the book.

In a Boat in the Middle of a Lake: Trusting the God Who Meets Us in Our Storm
by
Patrick Schwenk and Ruth Schwenk
Linda Preiss
, October 08, 2020
“In a Boat in the Middle of a Lake” is a raw, honest and real book about struggles we face in life. The Schwenk’s open up about dealing with a cancer diagnosis and show us how to deal with the hard things that come our way. They talk about how God is our refuge and strength and we can look to Him when it feels like the storms that are coming our way will overtake us. God can provide the calm within the storm. He probably won’t take away the storm or remove us from it – but he will help us through it. Even though there is chaos all around us, He can provide peace in the midst of the storm. I highly recommend this book to others who are facing a storm in their life. It may not be as big as a cancer diagnosis, but any storm that looks to separate us from God, is one that we need to battle. This book helps us to keep our focus on God, not the wind and the waves. He will be right beside us to help us stay calm. I was given an advanced reading copy of “In a Boat in the Middle of a Lake” by Patrick and Ruth Schwenk for an honest opinion of the book.

The Whistle Blower
by
Robin Merrill
Linda Preiss
, August 14, 2020
The Whistle Blower by Robin Merrill is a cozy mystery about a housewife who gets involved in solving the murder of a soccer referee; and she does it with the help of a guardian angel – yes, that kind of Angel! I enjoy these types mysteries because there is an element of suspense, but not to the extent of being overly creepy. This one also had an angel involved in the story so that made it unique. Most cozy mysteries have an unexpected person doing the amateur sleuth and this one is no exception – an average, ordinary stay-at-home soccer mom. As a stay-at-home mom myself, it was fun to read what kind of trouble she got into and how she dealt with trying to do detective work while also dealing with kids in school and an infant. If you like mysteries and Christian stories, you will enjoy this one!

Comparison Girl: Lessons from Jesus on Me-Free Living in a Measure-Up World
by
Shannon Popkin
Linda Preiss
, July 27, 2020
Not only did I read Comparison Girl by Shannon Popkin, but I also participated in a small group study of the book. And all I can say is Wow! Shannon really hits the nail on the head regarding todays society being a “measure-up world”. With so many people using social media including Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest, it’s hard not to compare your life with those who you see online. It seems that it is even harder in todays society to ‘keep up with the Joneses’ than it ever was before. With the ability to see instantly when someone gets a new car, goes on vacation, or hosts the perfect birthday party for their child – a comparison trap is an easy one to fall into. Shannon uses the metaphor of a measuring cup throughout the book. It shows us that we shouldn’t spend our time measuring ourselves against others but to pour out what we have to others. If we focus on how we can help others (pour out)then we are not focused on the lines on the side of the cup to see how we measure up to those around us. Shannon takes the reader on a journey to look at several areas where we can compare ourselves with others – Sin, Wealth, Beauty, Ministry and Status. She really lays things out there and helps us see where comparison is wrong and points us back to Jesus to find our value and worth. I highly recommend this book if you find yourself scrolling online and feeling like you don’t measure up!

Veiled in Smoke
by
Jocelyn Green
Linda Preiss
, January 29, 2020
Veiled in Smoke is a historical fiction book set during the Great Fire of Chicago. It follows one family through the trials of losing everything and working to rebuild a life afterwards. Jocelyn’s books are always full of rich history. While reading, if feels as if you are right there beside the characters. I could almost smell the smoke as I was reading about the families walking away from their homes trying to escape. This was really a page turner for me. Sometimes with historical novels I can get really bogged down in the details of the history, but not this one. I wanted to know what was going to happen to the main characters and how they were going to come back from such a tragedy. I highly recommend this book. It has tragedy, triumph and hope! It will bring you to tears but also leave you with the feeling that there is always hope on the horizon no matter what you are going through today! This is book one of a series titled the Windy City Saga and I can’t wait to read the rest! I was given an advance reading copy of Veiled in Smoke by Jocelyn Green for honest feedback of the book.

Sightings
by
Lynn Austin
Linda Preiss
, December 03, 2019
I received a copy of "Sightings" by Lynn Austin for an honest review. I met Lynn a couple of years ago at a summit for readers. I had not read any of her books prior to this. After meeting her, I have been working my way through all of her books. She is a wonderful writer and her stories are just so beautiful. So, when I was given the opportunity to review her newest book, I jumped at the chance. This book is different than her other books. This one is a devotional book meant to be read/studied over 10 weeks. Lynn uses her experiences and her thoughtfulness to look for God in the ordinary, average parts of life. Her stories are so simple, but well written, and make you look at daily life in a whole new way. I highly recommend this book. It will please any Lynn Austin fans but will also resonate with everyone; especially those who struggle to see God outside of Sunday morning. This book give you hope!

Back Roads to Belonging: Unexpected Paths to Finding Your Place and Your People
by
Kristen Strong
Linda Preiss
, August 13, 2019
I was given an advance reading copy of “Back Roads to Belonging” by Kristen Strong for an honest review of the book. Back Roads to Belonging is such a fantastic book to help people find their way to being part of a bigger picture. She tackles subjects such as sitting on the sidelines, kindness to yourself and others, finding your people, helping others and the list goes on. She presents topics and ideas in very simple ways that can be challenging, but don’t feel overwhelming. After moving to a new state four years ago, I still feel like I haven’t fully found “my people”, but Kristen’s book gave me hope that I would, and ideas on how to help myself along the way. Most importantly, Kristen points out that no matter where we think we want or should belong, we truly need to remember to whom we belong – God! It doesn’t matter if we are completely surrounded by people in this world, we know we have a place to belong in the next! Back Roads to Belonging is the second book from Kristen Strong. Her first book “Girl Meets Change” is excellent and is a perfect precursor to this one. If you haven’t read it yet and are considering getting “Back Roads to Belonging”, get “Girl Meets Change” also. I found that change certainly affected my sense of belonging.

Wooing Cadie McCaffrey
by
Bethany Turner
Linda Preiss
, June 03, 2019
I received an advanced reading copy of “Wooing Cadie McCaffrey” by Bethany Turner for an honest review of the book. This is another fabulous and funny book by Bethany Turner. If you are familiar with her first book “The Secret Life of Sarah Hollenbeck”, you will not be disappointed in this one. You will enjoy it just as much! If you aren’t familiar with Sarah, go get them both. Wooing Cadie McCaffrey is a fun story that follows your typical romantic comedy formula – boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy wins girl back. But there are a few quirks along the way. It is full of humor and pop culture references that will keep you smiling along the way and some moments of laugh out loud hilarity. At one point a tough subject is broached and the characters have to figure their way through it. It was a twist I wasn’t expecting and it was handled very well. The main thing I take away from these types of romances is that communication is very important – otherwise the main characters wouldn’t be in their current situation. Which always makes me want to talk to my husband more and more clearly! I highly recommend this book. It really is a fun and fast read and full of humor you won’t soon forget!

True You: Letting Go of Your False Self to Uncover the Person God Created
by
Michelle Derusha
Linda Preiss
, January 06, 2019
Have you ever made New Year’s Resolutions only to break them by February? I think many, many people fall into this category. It is difficult to make changes, especially hard ones. One thing I have noticed about New Year’s Resolutions is that most of the ones people make – exercise more, lose weight, get in shape, eat better, etc. – are purely physical in nature. Maybe there is a better resolution to make. True You by Michelle DeRusha is a book about becoming a better you – the truest you that you can be. The Subtitle says it best – “Letting go of your false self to uncover the person God created.” This is not a physical transformation, but a spiritual/mental transformation. Is it still a hard resolution? Oh yes! But Michelle walks you through it step by step. Using her own story, wonderful metaphors and in-depth, thoughtful questions, Michelle helps you take a look at yourself to find the True You hidden beneath. This is such a wonderful book. I have read a few books like this before, but I have not felt the overwhelming need to underline passages. It also makes me want to re-read it slower with even more purpose than the first time – truly digging deep to uncover myself. It may not be an easy read, but it is a thought provoking read; a soul searching read. I think reading this at the beginning of a brand new year, is one of the best ways to start the year with a resolution you just might be able to keep. I received an advance reading copy of “True You” by Michelle DeRusha for an honest review of the book.

God's Girl Says Yes: What God Can Do When We Follow Him
by
Wynter Pitts
Linda Preiss
, July 18, 2018
I was given an advanced reading copy of “God’s Girl Says Yes” by Wynter Pitts for an honest review of the book. This is a wonderful book for young girls. Wynter talks about saying Yes to God in obedience of his commands and how that can look in each of our lives. She breaks concepts down to an easy level for young girls to understand. She writes in a conversational style that makes it seem like you are just sitting on the couch talking with her. Each chapter has Bible verses that accompany the discuss and ends with a prayer. She also tackles the Fruit of the Spirit. There is one chapter dedicated to each of the fruit – Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control. The chapters are wonderful descriptions of what the fruit is and how you can produce it in your life. These are concepts that are quite difficult for most adults, but Wynter breaks them down nicely on a level that is easy to understand along with ideas to add them to your everyday life. I highly recommend this book for the young girl in your life. I plan to have my 13 year old read it and I expect she will get much out of it!

A Refuge Assured
by
Jocelyn Green
Linda Preiss
, January 22, 2018
I was given an advanced reading copy of “A Refuge Assured” by Jocelyn Green for an honest review of the book. This is another wonderful book by Jocelyn Green. It is the story of French refugees arriving in America after the fall of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution. The story followed one female refugee, Vivienne, who was running for her life from the Revolutionaries. Her crime? She made lace for the nobility in France. Since being part of nobility was a death sentence, and lace was a sign of nobility, lacemaking was a very dangerous profession. Vivienne was able to escape and secure transport to America, hoping to save her own life. Vivienne’s life went from a life of relative luxury, even though she did work, to one of hardship and having to survive on her own. There are twists and turns to her life she never expected – including who to trust and who not to. As in “The Mark of the King”, Jocelyn provided a rich history of French culture here in America. The research put into the story is very thorough and fascinating. If you are not familiar with the immigration of the French into America, you will find lots of interesting information, which may prompt more reading! I highly recommend this book. It is full of historical information, wonderful details, and a story of interesting characters you won’t soon forget!!

Free to Lean: Making Peace with Your Lopsided Life
by
Jocelyn Green
Linda Preiss
, October 02, 2017
I was given an advanced reading copy of “Free to Lean” by Jocelyn Green for an honest review of the book. Free to Lean is a terrific book and one that will help you understand that a perfect life is an illusion and we all will lean from time to time. The main thing we need to do is know where to lean so we don’t get hurt! God is our refuge and strength and we can lean into Him whenever we feel overwhelmed by the circumstances in our life. Each chapter tackles a new topic with wit, wisdom and inspiring personal stories. Jocelyn writes from a place of humbleness. Her writing isn’t condemning or haughty, but kind and loving. You can tell she is walking the path along side you, not just dictating what you need to do to fix your life. She gives real world examples, including some of her own personal experiences, along with ideas on how to deal with the issue. At the end of the chapter, there are questions to make you think about where you are and where you want to go. Some of these questions can be tough, but if you are willing to put the time and effort into them – along with the personal reflection – you can make real changes in your life. I highly recommend this book to others who suffer from the feeling that they must put on a perfect exterior to show the world that all is right in their life. We all need to realize there is no such thing as perfect and that everyone leans. We need to be free to embrace the leaning so that we may find peace.

Girl Meets Change: Truths to Carry You Through Life's Transitions
by
Kristen Strong
Linda Preiss
, September 17, 2015
Girl Meets Change " Book Review This book, written by former military wife Kristen Strong, is one of the best I’ve read recently. It tackles the subject of change " which most people are adverse to and try to avoid. However, change does greet a person during their lifetime " and usually several times. Kristen addresses change " whether it is brought about by your own idea as in “I am choosing to switch jobs” or if it is imposed on you by someone or something else (i.e. The U.S. Government who employs your spouse tells you where to move next) " and some simple ways to rearrange your thinking to make it a positive experience instead of a negative one. Throughout the book Kristen relates stories from her own personal life and those of people around her that really give you a clear picture of how change affects everyone and how your attitude towards it can help you or hinder you along the way. She also points us directly to God and how his love can also help along the way. Sometimes change can be huge and sometimes change can be small, but we are all affected by change in one way or another. If you, like me, sometimes deal with change like a toddler by kicking and screaming and throwing a huge fit " this book is for you. Or if you usually handle just fine, you could also benefit from this book and handle it better than fine. Just by changing your attitude and focus of the change, can help you deal with it so much better! I read this book at a time when my husband transitioned out of the military into the civilian world, we moved the family across the country, the kids started new schools in a state they never lived in before; to say that we experienced change is an understatement. But Kristen’s book was such a wonderful gift at just the right time in my life to help me handle everything that was going on. I cannot recommend it enough!!
