Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Mouse Guard 01 Fall 1152
by

This was a good book, with very detailed and beautiful imagery. The book seems to have a strange balance between the cutesiness of little mice wearing cloaks and fighting with needle swords and the dark, with mice being graphically shown eaten by snakes, cut out of their bellies, the snake beheaded, and another mouse being town apart by giant crabs. I think this book might disturb children that are lured into reading it, because it really has a dark storyline more appealing to an adult audience. However, the storyline is rich, and as an adult, it's a good book.

Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone
by
Deborah Madison

This is a great cookbook for those new to vegetarian cooking. It is very comprehensive, with sections on cooking basics, techniques, and menus. This is a huge book full of delicious recipes from appetizers to main courses to deserts. The recipes are very easy to adapt for vegans and meat-eaters. Even if you are an experienced cook, you will find many great recipes and maybe even pick up a few new techniques.

Letters From A Nut

This is a very funny book of letters written to various places, including a lot of hotels in Las Vegas, with bizarre and wacky requests and their responses. I actually found a response letter written by my former boss in this book! This may have been done before by other authors, but that doesn't make this any less funny. There are 2 other books if this suits your sense of humor.

This comic book makes history interesting in a unique and insightful way. As the title says, this covers the world from the age of Columbus to the time of the U.S. Constitution. There are 2 earlier titles (The Cartoon History of the Universe Parts I and II). I can't wait for the next installment!

Moon Is Down
by
John Steinbeck

This short novel by John Steinbeck seems to be unjustly overlooked. It concerns the occupation of Norway by the Nazis in WWII, but is also relevant today. If only the people who support war in the 21st century read this novel. Steinbeck makes the important point that many fail to understand--occupation is never sustainable.
