Well-developed, true-to-life characters make this a good, thought-provoking tale about a girl trying to deal with her brother's autism. This book deserves applause.

London 1849 A Victorian Murder Story
by
Michael Alpert

Michael Alpert introduces the reader to 1849 London with rich detail. This book is a snapshot of an era. Much more depth than the everyday true crime novel makes this a particularly enriching read.

An absolutely gripping screen rendition of Dickins' classic. The BBC got this absolutely right.

Girl Named Zippy Growing Up Small in Mooreland Indiana
by
Haven Kimmel

, May 09, 2008
"My mother said she was a 120 pound woman, but she kept herself wrapped in fat to avoid bruising."- these and other zingers keep this book light and cheery. Kimmel writes like a comedian, but has the ability to cover serious issues. This is a great book.

History of Love
by
Nicole Krauss

The author has personified loneliness in the form of Leo Gursky. Humorous and real, your heart breaks for Gursky even as the plot trucks along at a constant speed. Beautiful prose highlights this story about a man and his longing to make a difference- any difference- without knowing that he already has. A must-read.

Let There Be Clothes 40000 Years Of Fash
by

A fascinating history of fashion and the things we've done for vanity! Can you believe women used to outline varicose veins to accentuate them, wear wet dresses, or collars sharp enough to cut their cheeks? Interesting and well-researched, this book is a conversation-starter.

In the Time of the Butterflies
by
Julia Alvarez

From the book's very beginning, you know that three of the four Mirabal sisters are going to be assassinated. As you become acquainted with each of them- all mothers and ordinary women- one a lawyer, one a young bride- you wish the ending were not so. None of the sisters planned on becoming rebel spies and gun runners in the Dominican Republic, but that was what life demanded from them. This story of grace and courage in the face of despotism is based on true events. An inspiring read.

One Small Boat A Story Of Foster Care
by
Kathy Harrison

, September 12, 2007
Riveting- this book is riveting. It is the story of 1 of 500,000 foster children in the US system, a little girl whose mother just didn't want her. It is the story of a foster family, and a mother who struggles to take care of the children who everyone turns their backs on. It is inspiring without being judgmental. Kathy is admirable while remaining very human. An excellent book.

A Different Kind of Perfect: Writings by Parents on Raising a Child with Special Needs

A Different Kind of Perfect is a great book for anyone who deals with special needs children. A collection of essays by parents who have been there, this book alternately made me laugh and cry. It is poignant, sad, and triumphant. It is an interesting read, no matter who you are. I would suggest this book as a great gift for any parent of a special needs child.

Jodi is a very believable heroine. With limited education but high ideals, she is determined to make it on her own after her husband abandons her at a gas station. Armed with 20 dollars and a good cole slaw recipe, Jodi sets out to have a better life. A great book.

Bold Spirit Helga Estbys Forgotten Walk Across Victorian America
by
Linda Lawrence Hunt
mariposamarie
, August 29, 2007
Helga Estby and her daughter set out to walk across America in an era when it was believed no one of the "weaker sex" could accomplish such a feat. It should have been a triumphal moment for suffragettes across America, but instead, following a tragic outcome, her family burned her notes of the journey and tried to silence her and keep her sequestered in shame. But she had done it! Helga Estby walked across America! Her story deserves to be told, and Linda Lawrence Hunt does a fine job of acquainting us with this heroic woman.

Maisie Dobbs: Maisie Dobbs 1
by
Jacqueline Winspear
mariposamarie
, August 29, 2007
Set in England during World War I, this book is a perfect blend of history and mystery- with just the right touch of romance! Maisie is a Red Cross Nurse, a psychologist, and a detective. She seeks to understand not only whodunnit, but why- and if the perpetrator can be healed. An excellent, satisfying read.
