Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Minutes To Burn
by
Gregg Andre Hurwitz

, October 07, 2009
Gregg Hurwitz is a rockstar, and this, his second novel, makes a great second entry on his concert T-shirt. Hurwitz tackles holes in the ozone that lead to... strange things? Picture the Galapagos Islands infested with very large and very dangerous insects that normally won't harm anything bigger than a fly. The story is compelling, and frightening, and makes you want to protect the ozone layer to boot. The research for the book had to be fun, and Hurwitz tells the tale so convincingly that you'll not want the book to end. It's part biological thriller (think Crichton), part war story (think Clancy) and part 1950's horror (think "Them"). A great read, a great ride.

The Tower

Gregg Andrew Hurwitz

In this, Gregg Hurwitz's first novel, you will meet a very disturbed psycopath. Then it gets worse. Hurwitz is obviously brilliant, but the stuff he thinks up will make your skin crawl. You hope beyond hope that no one decides to copycat the awful things his protagonist does to innocents. You cheer for the ex-FBI profiler who is hunting this beast. You are repulsed, and yet attracted to, the news anchor that exploits everyone. This is smart writing, and Hurwitz was just leaving college when it was published. Read it!

Teach Yourself Relaxation New Edition
by
Richard Craze

I found this to be an excellent book, as it goes beyond just teaching physical techniques of relaxation. It includes how our thoughts impact our ability to relax as well, touching on assertivness and Type A behaviors, among others. Muir provides helpful suggestions to "buffer" oneself from stressful events and the day to day hectic pace of the 21st century. The English accent on the CD, which walks you through the relaxation techniques, is additionally uplifting. I originally found this book at the library but after reading 3/4 of the way, I decided I should have my own copy.

Hip Sips Modern Cocktails to Raise Your Spirits
by
Lucy Brennan

If you are a fan of the cocktails at Mint or 820 here in Portland, this is the book for you. Lucy gives you the secrets behind her great drinks- no more trying to reverse engineer them (as fun as that can be) from the menu you swiped last time. The plastic cover is especially brilliant- keeps the book from getting sticky, and allows it to be wiped off. Great book, great gift for friends, GREAT drinks. Thanks for sharing your secrets, Lucy.
