Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Distrust That Particular Flavor
by
William Gibson
Adam Gallardo
, August 04, 2012
In this fine collection, Gibson claims that he has no talent for nonfiction. Do not believe him. What he does is to bring his novelist's eye and ear to bear on nonfiction subjects. The slightest of these essays (of which there are very few) read like dry runs for his fiction. The best read like nothing I've ever seen before. Very highly recommended.

Night & the Music Matthew Scudder Short Stories
by
Lawrence Block
Adam Gallardo
, January 02, 2012
Lawrence Block's Matthew Scudder is perhaps my favorite recurring character in all of literature. To have all of the Scudder short stories collected in one place (including some that have never seen print before) was like a huge gift to me. I blazed through this book in just a couple of days, but I've been dipping back into it ever since.
