Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Black Lamb & Grey Falcon A Journey Through Yugoslavia

This book is incredible. It's one of those books that, as you read it, you keep reminding yourself that you will read it again. If you buy this book, buy an edition with illustrations. Because you will read it again. And again.

Station Eleven
by
Emily St John Mandel

I simply couldn't put this book down. It's pre and post-apocalyptic, almost science fiction, but so plausible and realistic that it pulls the reader right in. It is wonderfully written; the characters have life and depth, and the plot has several divergent themes that flow through the story. All of them are brought together perfectly at the resolution. I haven't read any of Mandel's other books, but I will read them, and soon. She is a stunning young talent.

Gospel

Perhaps it's because I've studied theology and early church history, but this book gets me every time. The characters are wonderful, gyrating from wonder and elation to disillusionment and back again. They are searching for a lost gospel, and the reader is privy to that gospel while reading the book. And, reading it, one knows why the discovery excites so much intrigue in the Jews, Christians, and Moslems who are striving to get their hands on it. Very exciting, with God as a major (but rarely heard from) character. I pull it out every ten years or so. My trade paperback is so decrepit that I'm saving up for the used hardcover from Powell's.

The Power of Knowing God: A 6-Week, No-Homework Bible Study
by
Kay Arthur

I'm not sure what gave me the idea this book might provide some interesting insight. Perhaps it was the publisher's comment that "each self-contained study is a powerful resource for personal growth and small-group discussion". Whatever it was, I was mistaken. Each self-contained study is actually a carefully selected set of Bible passages that "prove" one of the generally accepted doctrines concerning the nature of the Evangelical God. It's about as far from real exegesis as you can get. Be warned.

Gone Away World
by
Nick Harkaway

Tell us about Nick Harkaway's "The Gone-Away World", Mrs. Moore. Gosh! It's got sex (the nice kind, not the dirty kind), violence (not too graphic), mimes, evil ninjas, corporate malfeasance, political satire, mutants, bromance, true love, a dreadful childhood, a halcyon childhood, pretty nurses, a glimpse of heaven, exploding sheep, filthy dive bars, clean dive bars, muscular warriors, muscular trucks, incredibly intelligent women, kind old ladies, wise teachers, secret societies, armageddon, vast conflagrations, a wondrous number of subtle references to other books, all wrapped up in a wodehousian sense of humor. It's one of those rare books where the author stays humble in the background and lets the story tell itself. In a nutshell, it's really, really my kind of book.
