Secret of the Sands
by
Rai Aren, Tavius E
Authors On The Rise Book Reviews
, June 22, 2008
The sands of Egypt’s past may hold the key to unlocking the future... The Kierani king underestimated the power it had. The Kierani priests too did not know the danger it possessed. Only the Chosen One knew of its true capabilities. But, the Kierani people will soon learn its true potential. In present-day Egypt, archaeologists Alex and Mitch stumble upon the find of a lifetime, but are puzzled by its implications. The scrolls, key notes and obelisk are in pristine condition, but what do they mean? Where did they come from? Now, Alex and Mitch must decide between hiding the power that they have found or unveiling it and receiving the archaeological immortality they have slaved over years to achieve. The debut novel from Rai Aren & Tavius E. is a well-written book that shows how passionate the writers are about Egyptology. The book setup creates an interesting combination of old and new and causes the reader to find out what happens next. Their detailed storytelling paints a picture of ancient Egypt in all its glory. The reader feels they are a part of the book, living amongst the Kierani people. The end of the novel leaves the reader curious and wanting more. This reader can hardly wait for the sequel, “Destiny of the Sands.” – 4 STARS, Reviewed by Leigh O’Donovan, Authors on the Rise Book Reviews

Honor Due
by
D. H. Brown
Authors On The Rise Book Reviews
, June 16, 2008
D.H. Brown's Honor Due is about a retired Army Special Operations Major, who is thrown back into the arena of warfare. “Once a special op's warrior always special op's warrior”. You don't ever let your guard down. You learn things about people and their ways that you wish you never had. You always stay prepared. The Major takes one look at the guy who entered his local watering hole and the warning bells of survival start to ring. He doesn't ignore these bells because they have served him well his whole adult life and kept him alive in some of the worse battles in Vietnam. Looking at this young man, the Major knows three things. One, someone wants him dead. Two, someone has made the ultimate mistake of bringing him back into the game of warfare. Three, he is going to have to kill this guy. Finding his longtime friend from Vietnam tortured to death was a low blow and one someone would pay for. The Major is now set on a mission of revenge and he’s back in a zone – predator vs. prey. There’s a blood debt that must be paid and he won’t stop until it is paid in full. D.H. Brown has written a top-notch novel. The suspense that he has put in this book will keep you turning the pages or tossing and turning through the night if you dare put it down before reaching it’s end. In his debut novel he shows the reader that he has mastered the art bringing the reader inside his world. You won’t only read Brown’s novel – you will feel his characters to your very core. D.H. Brown has earned a space on my book shelf with this superb tale and I look forward to reading more of his work. This is just the beginning of the Citizen Warrior Series and I wait anxiously for the next. Excellent work and highly recommended! 5-Stars, Reviewed by Michael S. Brian Keene
Authors On The Rise Book Reviews
, June 16, 2008
You have grown up hating the town you live in and want to get out as soon possible. Yet as with a lot of people’s dreams, some just don't come true. Life happens or so it does for Tommy O’Brien, Keene’s main character. O’Brien is living the life most folks fall into, marriage, children and the usual 40 hour grind. As if life isn’t hard on it’s on merit, O’Brien is faced with several life changing events one so devastating it leaves him literally on the edge of death. He’s not only lost his job at the factory but he’s found out he has terminal cancer. He’s scared and he’s alone in his disease because the last thing he wanted was his wife to worry. What was he going to do? Overwhelmed by the events that happen in his life O’Brien turns to his friends; after all he can’t keep it bottled up inside him because he knows if he does his wife and their son will be left with absolutely nothing. Sitting in the car with his best friends, John and Sherm, they devise a plan that hopefully will help him care for his family in his departure from this earth. The plan has to be carried out quickly though, because time is something O’Brien doesn't have the luxury of. Brian Keene's “Terminal”, is truly a page turner. I really enjoyed this book. Do you want to know what happens to O’Brien and his family? How are John and Sherm going to help their buddy in his time of need? I seriously suggest you read the book and find out! You will not be disappointed; Keene's spun an unforeseen heartwarming tale woven with love, friendship and a touch of the super natural. 4 Stars - Reviewed by Michael S. , May 22, 2008
At the age of 20, a solemn Florentino Ariza proclaimed his everlasting love to his sweetheart, Fermina Daza. But, in a moment of pity, Fermina cast away Florentino's love and married a wealthy doctor. Half a century, 622 affairs and the death of a doctor later, Florentino will once again proclaim his unrequited love for Fermina. His entire life he has prepared for this moment. Will Fermina return the affection that Florentino so desperately needs? Or will she refuse him again as she had done as a 16-year-old girl? Nobel Prize winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez beautifully narrates the tale of love that has sustained 50 years of turmoil. His use of rich language paints a picture of the Caribbean at the turn of the century. Marquez uses this backdrop expertly to weave the lives of the lovers throughout the pages and years of their lives. This book gives hope to those who believe that true love can overcome all, including death, disease, wealth and social class. A wonderfully written novel by one of the leading Latin American authors.

Green River Running Red The Real Story of the Green River Killer Americas Deadliest Serial Murderer
by
Ann Rule
Authors On The Rise Book Reviews
, May 22, 2008
They were found in the summer of 1982 in the Green River bed. Opal Mills, Marcia Chapman and Cynthia Hinds were far too young to die. When Kent Police Department (Washington) investigated the murder scene, they had no idea that they would be the first of many slain young women. It was the beginning of a nearly 20 year ordeal that would end with your average Joe admitting to the 48 grisly murders that occurred near Tacoma and Seattle, Washington. Anne Rule never fails to produce stellar material in the true crime genre. Writing about her own backyard, Rule interjects herself into the story, which creates a more personal narrative. With her trademark style, Rule writes a novel of cliffhanging chapters that keeps readers at the edge of their seats. Without a doubt, the most intimate offering from Rule since "The Stranger Beside Me."

Shark, the Baker's Son: Based on a True Story of a Mercenary Drug Informant
by
Anthony T. Aliberti
Authors On The Rise Book Reviews
, May 22, 2008
A young boy from the streets of the Pittsburgh suburb of Bloomfield becomes hooked on one of the 1980s most destructive excess: narcotics. This is the offbeat tale of Shark's rise from user, to dealer and finally to informant. His travels take him coast to coast in search of the next high. Will Shark overcome his addictions and finally settle down to a life of sobriety? Only if the cartel doesn't "hit" him first. This is the story of Anthony T. Aliberti. His memoir is hard hitting and straightforward. No frills are spared in his tell-all narrative. From his drug-induced adventures to his wild sexual exploits, Aliberti relays his autobiography unapologetically. An exciting read, cover to cover, Aliberti doesn't fail in bringing excitement and suspense to his debut novel.

Migration of the Kamishi
by
Devon C. Stone
Authors On The Rise Book Reviews
, May 22, 2008
Gaddy Bergmann's Migration of the Kamishi is the first book of three in The Feral World series. Though this book is set in the fifty-first century, readers will be transported back to a time when mankind lived off the land and didn't have the modern day conveniences we have come to know and take for granted in our everyday lives. The people of this time have made a conscious choice to live this way so as not to become what the inhabitants of this era consider 'managers'. The managers are the populace of the twenty first century. During this age of transition the people who live on the Earth after just barely surviving a hit by an asteroid have formed together in tribes. Bergmann first introduces us to the Kamishi tribe who live in modern day's North America. The Kamishi tribe is only two hundred strong as are most of the tribes of this time. They are a friendly and peaceful people who occupy one of the most sought after grounds for food and living conditions. Good for the Kamishi it would seem until their neighbors the Ravashi determine to take control of their lands. The Ravashi are a warring tribe and attack early in the book without a hint of warning. They annihilate everyone in the Kamishi tribe except for Blake, the son of their chief and Manosh, Blake's closest friend. The only material item saved is their 'Bebel' given to them by their tribe's elder who dies in their arms. The 'Bebel' is sacred and compares to our modern day's Bible. Left alone after the massacre of their people Blake determines they should make the journey to the Warmlands, but not until they rescue Blake's dogs from a handful of Ravashi warriors. After killing the Ravashi warriors Blake and Manosh set out on their journey to the Warmlands where they find themselves crossing over into other occupied territories until they reach what is known as a 'rubbletown'. A 'rubbletown' is a twenty-first century city that has crumbled away to nothing. While they are there they find themselves rescuing a young lady, Lana, from some dangerous men. Becoming the third member of the group they move on and continue to migrate towards the Warmlands together facing peril and tribulations along the way. This was a pleasant read. Gaddy Bergmann has woven a leisurely tale that leaves you wondering the impossible. It's intermingled with action and adventures, quietude and contemplation while filling you with a sense of wonder. Could this happen to our Earth? What if this really did happen, could the world of today survive and would they choose to survive as they had before? A book I highly recommend for readers of all genres as Bergmann's book stands out on a sea of many bookshelves. Open your minds and go on a journey with the Kamishi. You won't regret it. - 4.5 STARS

Ghoul
by
Brian Keene
Authors On The Rise Book Reviews
, May 22, 2008
This was an easy book to read. It is your classic horror story with a little twist. It revolves around three boys. One has an abusive father, one an incestuous mother, the other; the perfect family life. These three boys enjoy the summer months playing in the local cemetery. Where they have made an underground fort. But then the town starts missing women one of whom is the daughter of the local priest. This is the only difference I found in this story from any other horror story out there. Once you get past the three boys screwed up lives, it's the same old story. The evil character gets killed and the girl is rescued. So if you're seeking a book based on blood, guts and sex, Ghoul is one you may wish to read; however if you are looking for something new and surprising I wouldn't suggest it.

Forever Will You Suffer
by
Gary Frank
Authors On The Rise Book Reviews
, May 22, 2008
What a good read and great book. I truly enjoyed reading this book, it gives a breath of fresh air to the horror genre. Gary, has done an excellent job of telling the story of a centuries old promise of Forever Will You Suffer. The book starts out with Rich Summers going to the cemetery to visit his mothers and sisters graves. When he returns to the cab that has been waiting for him. He notices an awful smell. The cab starts driving away and there is thump under the car. Rich looks out the back window to notice the original driver dead in the road. He is dropped off at a old girlfriend's house only to find out she is in hiding because of stalker. This is where the roller coaster ride starts and you will not want to put this book down. Who is who and what is what. This is how you will go through in the book. It keeps you wanting to turn the pages to find out what is next. You will never know how this book is going to end until you turn the last page. This kind of writing is what will make Gary Frank a best selling author.

, May 22, 2008
Terry C. Johnston was born in 1947 on the plains of Kansas and has lived a varied life as a roustabout, history teacher, printer, paramedic, dog catcher, and car salesman, all the while immersing himself in the history of the early West. His first novel, Carry the Wind, won the Medicine Pipe Bearer's Award from the Western Writers of America, and his subsequent books, among them Cry of the Hawk, Winter Rain, Dream Catcher, and the Sons of the Plains trilogy, have appeared on bestseller lists throughout the country. Terry C. Johnston lived in Big Sky country near Billings, Montana. On February 4, 2001, Terry went into the hospital and was diagnosed with colon cancer. Terry lost his battle with cancer on March 25, 2001. The death of Mr. Johnston was a great loss to all readers and the American Indian. Mr. Johnston had a way of describing a battle from both the Indians side and the white mans side. He was always fair in his description of any battle from both sides. His fictional characters became real people to the reader. You found yourself waiting in anticipation for the next book to come out, so you could find out what was happening to ol scratch, or what battle was sheamus going to be in. You found yourself sitting in the teepee with Red Cloud, or riding into battle with Crazy Horse. Feeling the fear of Fetterman the day of his massacre. Mr. Johnston was a great author. I have read all of his books and can only give them high praise. I will not go through and review everyone of his books. It has been to long ago that I have read them. But I know this and I remember each and everyone of them and will rate all with five stars. If you want to read a great Historical fiction of the old wild west. Then TERRY C JOHNSTON is who you should be reading.

Christopher Boone likes night-time walks. On one of these walks, he discovers the body of his neighbor’s dog pierced by a pitchfork. The death of the animal awakens Christopher’s desire to investigate and solve the dog’s hideous murder. Christopher’s detective work drums up some interesting leads, not only about the dog, but also about some mysteries in Christopher’s own life. In the end, Christopher will have to choose between the family he knows and his need for knowing the truth about the incident of the dog in the night-time. Mark Haddon’s portrait of an autistic boy on a mission is well written, and perfectly told. The story, composed as a first-person narrative, expertly portrays the actions and mind set of a person living with autism. Haddon’s complex storytelling may confuse some readers, but it is essential to building the foundation of Christopher’s character. It helps the reader to understand the thought patterns autistic people. Haddon does a wonderful job weaving the chapters to create a compelling and surprising read.

Dante's Destiny: Nothing Is What It Seems
by
Jimason, James A.
Authors On The Rise Book Reviews
, May 22, 2008
Nothing is what it seems.... It's a world full of good and a world full of evil. The King has cast off the rebellious Dagon and his band of Dementors to the dark abyss. But, Dagon is full of revenge, and when the King chooses a child to be born with the light of the King, Dagon will stop at nothing to eradicate the child and his family. Dante grows up in a world full of hate, and he is sucked right into the immoral lifestyle. Bad choices lead Dante to a life behind bars, but the King has a plan for him. And, when Dante is let out of prison on a technicality, the King puts his plan into action for bringing Dante to the light, leaving the Dementors scurrying to finally get rid of Dante. James A. Jimson creates an interesting story of good v. evil, and the rewards and consequences that come with both. His writing is detailed, and his flow throughout the story creates fascination by jumping from one person to the other. The reader never knows what's coming next. However, Jimason's use of names that start with "D" and "M" can be confusing. It was difficult to keep all of the characters straight. Also, the intertwining of multiple story lines could cause readers to become overwhelmed by all of the twists and turns. Overall, Jimason's story of morality is a story that all readers could benefit from consuming. - 3 Stars Reviewed by Leigh O'Donovan, Authors on the Rise Book Reviewer

Frank Berry's novel Greatest Game is a compelling read. The question is which is the Greatest Game? Is it the world games put on by World Wide Games or is it the race to control the oil reserves in China? Berry has woven a great story of espionage, love and revenge. Frank Thro is the ultimate hero in this story. He suffers the death of his father and of his teammates. And if that is not enough for one’s plate, betrayal by a life long friend. Luckily, he gains the love of a CIA operative, who together solve the greatest mystery of the true question at hand “which is the greatest game?” Frank Berry has done an excellent job with Greatest Game. The story is well written and easy to follow. Franks ability to bring his story alive is extraordinary. You the reader will find yourself entranced, I would really be surprised to find your book with dog eared pages. Proud Souls

Ozuna, Bobby
Authors On The Rise Book Reviews
, February 21, 2008
Bobby Ozuna's novel the Proud Souls is a remarkable read. Seymour is a small town in Texas and it has developed quite a history in the last six years. Justin Olerude Bower, the Rev. Hillard Ray Polk, Ralph Winslow Parison and the so called “ town whore” Tessa Jameson have been living the last six years in their own self induced personal prison. Justin has lost his wife and son in an accident. He has spent the last six years in a bottle, just waiting to die. Ralph Parison is in the truck that crashes into Justin and his family, for which he just can't forgive himself. The Rev. Polk, lives in his prison, feeling as though he has lost Justin's soul. Tessa's prison is one of torn feelings toward Justin, she’s fallen in love with a man who doesn't want to live. Each character in this novel will come alive and you will feel their desperation, their sadness and loneliness. You will come to wonder, what if my life was to come to these types of problems. How would I handle such a difficult time? Who would I turn too? Who would really be able to help me? Who would make me make the right decisions in life? And the most important question of all. Would I choose life or death or choose to live with the pain of losing the people you loved the most. Bobby Ozuna has done a spectacular job in writing this novel. His writing style is one that will bring his characters to life. He has the ability to take your feelings on a roller coaster and leave you needing to turn the pages. This is a must read. You, the reader, will not regret reading this book, even though it will mean you will be sacrificing a few nights sleep just because you can’t put it down. 4.5 stars

Lick Me
by
Deleon Demicoli
Authors On The Rise Book Reviews
, January 17, 2008
The characters in DeLeon Demicoli’s book are definitely a rare breed. Seth Barton is an outlaw throwing underground rave parties with the help of his prankster friend Louis. Lick Me – doesn’t mean what it sounds like, it just so happens to be tied into one of the rave parties that featured Louis’ tongue. DeLeon takes us into an underground world where many are never privy to. Norah is introduced into the tale DeLeon weaves and to Seth under what seems like unfavorable circumstances however as the story progresses Norah and Seth join outlaw forces as crusaders, battling those who commit crimes against women. The book starts slow – the language unique and the style by which DeLeon writes is as outlawed as his characters. After getting used to the ebb and flow of things and pushing on I found this book to be a very exciting adventure. He starts to really blow the characters up and bring them to life; the story evades its slow trickle to a feverish flow down a rapid river gone wild in a storm. You’ll be wondering what’s next, turning the next page and find yourself at the end very glad you didn’t let the slow start hinder your judgment to read onward. - Reviewed by Michael Timlin - Authors on the Rise Book Reviews

Crows on the Cross

Kristy Tallman
Authors On The Rise Book Reviews
, January 14, 2008
Crows on the Cross is Kristy Tallman's second novel. The story starts with two lovers who are in a car crash together. When they wake up they are each alone. Rainey is in Virginia and Drew is in Florida. The states represent where Rainey and Drew's personal hell began in the days of their youth. When Rainey wakes up in her pristine 1969 Cadillac, she can't remember how it is she got home, let alone where she has been, or why the car and her clothes smell of smoke. All she does know for certain is that her and her lover Drew had a fight - but over what? Not even she knows why, but unable to find him Rainey's drawn by the disparate need to head south. Without knowing where he is she heads to the only place she knows he might be - in Florida. Drew is first introduced waking up in Miami, Florida in Rainey's beloved 69 Cadillac staring hard into his childhood church. Why? Only able to remember the horrible accident that took Rainey away from him he's left to wonder how he ended up back in Florida and how he's driving around in a car that wrapped around a tree. Nothing makes sense - who's the shadowy man at the church and how is he going to endure his life after losing Rainey? The stranger at the church sends Drew reeling back in time - the nightmare of his childhood comes slamming back into his memory after all these years of keeping it hidden. Filled with anger and a broken heart he decides he's got to get the hell out of Florida. He's on a mission to Virginia to return the caddie back to Rainey's mother or so he tells himself. Both Rainey and Drew suffer flash backs into their childhood, where each of them has had to endure the worst kind of evil that can be inflicted upon a helpless child. This novel will send you on a roller coaster ride of emotional trauma, you'll scream in anger one moment then feel like crying the next as you ride with the characters Tallman has created in a car that isn't just any car. The demons she creates in this book are too real, so real it will change the way you look at the common passerby every time you walk out your front door. Kristy Tallman has done it again! Her ability to turn the pages of a novel into a real to life psychological hell for the reader by showing you that the genuine horror in this world is our very own human race has again been accomplished with an encore for more. Tallman has definitely surpassed the expectations I held after reading "The All-Souls Faire". She managed to shock me to the core and horrify me like no other author has in a long time! Excellent! 5-Stars
