Beautiful Ruins
by
Jess Walter

I've read most of Jess Walter's books, and though they span several genres, this may be his best, most fully realized book. In the end it is a love story of individuals, life, and Hollywood. The story spans 50 years, begins in a tiny hillside village in Italy, and ends in Idaho, with a stop in Hollywood. The characters are well developed and you will feel for all of them by the end (even Richard Burton). If I have any criticism it's that the final chapter is, essentiall, a wrap-up of all of the characters in the book. That being said, it's done very well.

Kings of Cool A Prequel to Savages
by
Don Winslow

First, let me state up front that I'm a big Don Winslow fan. This is not his best book, but it's a very good one for those that like his style (and he has several of them). This book has something like 250 "chapters" that are sometimes as short as one or two lines. As noted on the cover, this is a prequel to Savages. I think it is the better of the two books. Essentially, this book lays out the genesis of the three main characters (as well as supporting characters and characters from other Winslow books), literally from conception, and provides the details about how they became very successful pot dealers living the good life in Southern California. As with Savages, the book is violent, but it is a story about drugs. All-in-all a fun, quick read for those who like Winslow and/or thrillers.

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk
by
Fountain, Ben

This book has recieved a lot of praise, mostly worthy. It's not the great American novel, but it's a pretty good one. At times it's a bit heavy on the political commentary without adding anything new, and some of the situations are a bit implausible. But, the writing is good and the story is entertaining. If you've not read Ben Fountain before, try his book of short stories, Brief Encounters With Che Guevara.
