Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. The Omnivores Dilemma
by
Michael Pollan
natters
, January 04, 2010
If you care about food, you should read this book. If you don't care that much about food, you should DEFINITELY read this book. Michael Pollan follows four meals from growth to plate, with a well-researched journalistic view. He's not telling you what or how to eat, just presenting the information in an engaging and entertaining style. You'll walk away having learned something about your dinner!

One Hundred Young Americans
by
Michael Franzini

, March 17, 2008
This is an amazing find- gorgeous photography and compelling narratives. Franzini obviously took great care in selecting and documenting his subjects. The photos will stop you in your tracks- a diverse group of young people staring directly into the camera, each in unique locals. Each teen picked their own setting and wardrobe and was given the chance to tell their own story. It's an eye-opening look at youth culture in America today. The kids range from jocks and preps to vampires and sex workers. Every kid you went to high school with is included in the group, as well as many teens that simply defy all labels. 100 Young Americans reminded me of my own adolescence, and gave me new insight into what it's like to be a part of the instant access generation.
