Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Blockchain Revolution The Brilliant Technology Changing Money Business & the World
by
Don Tapscott, Alex Tapscott
peter
, November 17, 2016
Extremely clearly written look at blockchains and how they can impact our lives in many ways previously unrealized. What are blockchains? They are a technology used to provide security for bitcoin virtual currency transactions, requiring that each user make a permanent record of his interaction with the system to avoid future tampering. The author foresees this technology spreading to many areas of our life, including to the internet of things, to our music, to educational systems, etc. Not overly technical--even a Luddite can appreciate this book.

The Hatred of Poetry
by
Ben Lerner
peter
, October 31, 2016
This book, really more of an extended essay, makes the case that poetry is simultaneously and paradoxically irrelevant and cherished in modern society and examines the reasons why. I enjoyed reading it, until I reached the portion about Amiri Baraka, aka LeRoi Jones, the notorious former poet laureate of New Jersey. Lerner, himself an academic, analyses Baraka's "poetry" without ever acknowledging its blatant anti-Semitism. Once I was reminded how far left and how anti-Semitic the academy has become, I lost interest.

Mostly True A Memoir Of Family Food
by
Molly ONeill

Molly, Loved your brother Paul's playing while a Yankee, and your food writing for the New York Times (which I no longer subscribe to, but that's another story.) Glad to see you have a book out, and I will read it soon. Good luck. Powell's books' software made me give you a rating even though the book hasn't been released just yet, but I'm sure there will be no need to change it.
