Of Walking in Rain

I adored "Gimme Refuge," but must admit I had doubts about pulling off a full book on rain-- but Matt Love did it. I got sucked in. As a native Oregonian who does not own an umbrella (full disclosure-- I have owned umbrellas, but not while residing in Oregon because we just don't do that here), I have a special love for rain and get it already, but while hanging on for Mr Love's exuberant, wild ride I learned a few things about rain and about teaching. His passion for both are infectious. The story-telling, essays, poems, and history all blend together perfectly. Reading this book is experiencing something intimately familiar as if for the first time. I read "Of Walking in Rain" during a sunny spell, and I wish for rain. I've got my sweaters and boots, but the sun keeps shining. I'm glad Matt Love has written the book this Oregonian (and I'm sure many others) didn't know they needed to read. It reminds me of every run I've done in rain that makes me feel alive. It reminds me of a few choice days and nights from my life where rain played a starring role. The rain is an old friend, but she's constantly new.

Gimme Refuge The Education of a Caretaker

Anyone who's ever thrown him- or herself full-on into a search for who you want to be should read this book: it's a great story of a man who's a great teacher but wants to be a writer, and he is educated about himself and the ways of the world through a residency as caretaker at a refuge on Nestucca Spit. It's about love, loving what you're doing, finding who you are. It's a funny, charming love story to the Oregon coast and to the teaching profession. It's an ode to geese and dogs, to the clarity of physical labor, and the rewards of chasing your passion. An acknowledgment of the necessity of every step and misstep along the way, with a lot of Rolling Stones lyrics thrown in for good measure. I found myself underlining great thoughts and dog-earring several pages to go back to. This book feels like a new friend.
