Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child
by

I have given Gottman's book, Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child, as a gift to many a new parent. Chapter 2's assessment of 'your parenting style' gave me an insightful look into my own parenting strengths and weaknesses as a well-intentioned, but often misguided, loving parent. Generally speaking, all parents want to be supportive mothers and fathers, but it doesn't come naturally. The art of emotional coaching that Gottman recommends for our children requires emotional awareness and a specific set of listening and problem-solving skills that takes more than just a parent's conscious decision to take a warm and positive approach to dealing with their child. This book helped me become a better parent and since I've read it I have wanted to share it with all the parents I know.

Miss Suzy 40th Anniversary Edition

My daughters and I wore the storybook of Miss Suzy out reading it in their childhood. Taped and torn it was saved as one of their favorites to be passed down to their children. This last weekend, my 3 year-old grand-daughter and I had the most satisfying drive, her sitting in her car seat in the back of the car and I in the front. It had been a long time since I had read the book, in the past committed to memory, but we managed even though I could not see the pages. As she turned the pages she described the pictures jogging my memory of the words on the page. I was tickled at her descriptive ability and her total absorption in the sequence of the story. Every page brought out her empathy and when asked which was her favorite picture it was the last of Miss Suzy finally safely back in her bed in the Tip-Tip-Top of the Tall Oak Tree. "Of course!",I exclaimed. We experienced the most engaging interlude to the end of a perfect day together. Thank you, Miriam Young!
