Redshirts

Redshirts is an outstanding book. Not only is it funny (laugh out loud funny in places), but the three codas are more thoughtful and make up the perfect ending. You don't have to be a sci-fi geek/junky to enjoy it, either. I normally read epic fantasy. (It's not a big jump from fantasy to sci-fi. However, after being used to 800-1000 page books, I love that I can read a complete story in 300-400 pages and still come away knowing my money was well spent.) John Scalzi is a master. I won some of his books in a Tor giveaway a couple years ago and became an instant fan. I've recommended Redshirts to all of my friends. It's a great read!

Wise Mans Fear The Kingkiller Chronicle Day Two
by
Patrick Rothfuss

The Wise Man's Fear was absolutely the best book I read in 2011. Patrick Rothfuss has a gift for telling amazing stories. Be sure to read The Name of the Wind first. I loved both books and cannot wait for the third to come out. Kvothe has been written so well you cannot help but care for him. His story, both in the past and the present, is moving. I lost many hours of sleep reading this book. It is one of the finest examples of the fantasy genre.

Way of Kings Stormlight Archive 01
by
Brandon Sanderson

If you're only reading the Wheel of Time books do yourself a big favor and branch out. Brandon Sanderson has spent years honing his craft and The Way of Kings is definitely his best yet. It does start off a little slow, but it's worth it. The characters are well developed, and if you've read any of his other books then you know to expect magic unlike any you've ever read before. You won't be let down with this newest book. I cannot wait to see where the series takes us!

Final Empire Mistborn 1
by
Brandon Sanderson

Mistborn was responsible for my renewed interest in fantasy novels. I pretty much only read fantasy and was becoming... not bored really - more numb to a lot of the books I was reading. I read online somewhere that Brandon Sanderson would be helping to complete Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series and knowing Harriet and Tor wouldn't just pick someone willie-nillie, I decided to give him a read prior to The Gathering Storm. I read Elantris first (great book!!!) then moved on to Mistborn. The magic system in this book is unlike anything I'd experienced in a book before - unique, well-thought out, and left room for exploration. And that's not the best part (you'll have to read on to book three for that). I love the characters - even the bad guy(s). Everything about this trilogy is great. I highly recommend it to friends and family all the time. And if you like it as much as I do, make sure to visit Brandon Sanderson's website for annotations on the chapters that go more in depth. To paraphrase the author - it's like DVD extras, but for books. Just don't start reading them until your done with the book - spoilers abound. (The same goes for the second and third books in the series.) Granted, part of the story follows the usual formula - low person is destined for greatness - but even with that, it's not what you're thinking, trust me. If you're looking for something new and different in fantasy, pick this book up - and be glad the trilogy is now complete!!!
