Show Grooming The Look Of A Winner
by
Charlene Strickland
Mary Abercrombie
, August 14, 2011
Show Grooming, by Charlene Strickland, and Grooming to Win, by Susan Harris, are really two of the most important grooming books a horseman can own. The detailed show turnout information in this one is invaluable, with clever tricks and time-honored methods. The text and illustrations are easy to follow and reproduce. The author also stresses the importance of daily horse care as the most important show preparation you can make, and discusses ways to make all grooming extra-effective and efficient. When I was showing in my teens, my copy of Show Grooming was filthy and dog-eared from it's life in my barn locker, but my horse was beautifully turned out. I've just started showing again, and realize that the book is just old enough to have classic styles the younger set has never seen. Thus, when I got my hunter turned out for show, there were many admiring double-takes... and really, isn't that the point of Show Grooming? Getting that 2nd look from the judge?

Horses Pain Free Back & Saddle Fit Book Ensure Soundness & Comfort with Back Analysis & Correct Use of Saddles & Pads
by
Joyce Harman
Mary Abercrombie
, March 15, 2011
Dr Joyce Harmon is a veterinarian, as well as a chiropractor and acupuncturist. She sees firsthand, the damage a poorly fitted saddle can cause a horse. Her book is filled with illustrations and easy-to-understand language, educating you on the horse's biomechanics and the reasons for effective fit. You learn all about the construction of the saddle, allowing you to be an educated shopper of both new and used gear, and also the proper care to ensure that your saddle lasts as long as possible. I've watched several saddle-fit videos, and attended numerous clinics, but I've never retained all that much from them, but this book has it all so clearly laid out that I finally have a real understanding. Dr. Harmon also discusses fit issues with numerous body types (I happen to have a flat backed arab with well sprung ribs and a forward shoulder, and very forward girth line) to show why fit is important not just at the start of the ride, but 20 minutes in. You learn about confirmation, cues that the horse is already impaired, suggestions for straightness, leg and hoof care, and she also lists a lengthy recommended reading list. I now have effective tools for shopping with confidence and the knowledge to protect my horse and support my own riding. This book belongs on the shelf of every rider, trainer and veterinary clinic. I may just buy an extra copy for my own vet!

Real Ultimate Power The Official Ninja Book
by
Robert Hamburger
Mary Abercrombie
, April 07, 2009
This is THE gift for the immature guy in your life: brother, uncle, cousin, boyfriend, whatever, just get it. I have never gotten so many dirty looks as when I read this on my lunch break. I chuckled. I tittered. I snorted. I made a shocked Ha! noise. I laughed until I couldn't eat anymore without choking. To sum up: this book is hysterical. However, it is not for everyone. This is written from the perspective of a twelve-year-old boy with an unusual passion for ninjas, a foul mouth, and a vivd imagination. I gave this book as a present to a boyfriends brother almost 6 years ago, and he still comments on it every time I see him. I'm laughing now just thinking about it.

Magic Strikes Kate Daniels 03
by
Ilona Andrews
Mary Abercrombie
, April 07, 2009
This is the third book in the Kate Daniels series, and although you could read it as a stand-alone, you would not get nearly the same level of enjoyment. Kate is another fictional butt-kicking heroine, but in a very unique world. She resides in Atlanta in an alternate world where magic and technology affect the city, and it's inhabitants, in waves. When the tech is up, lights, phones, and cars work, buildings stay up, and guns fire. When the magic is up, none of the above function, and all sorts of mystical and magical creatures gain the upper hand. In this installment, we learn more about Kate's unusual and impressive heritage, as she is forced to infiltrate a gladiator-style fighting competition, in order to protect her friends. In doing so, she exposes herself to the people she has been working so hard to hide from all her life... that is until she is capable of killing her mortal enemy: Roland. More of the were-world is explained, and Kate develops new relationships and others are strengthened. Now that the first two books have given us a strong setting, this novel delves more into Kate's own history and development. Yes, there is a romance thread, but it's more tantalizing than anything and only enhances the story. The author has matured with each novel, and this one flows much better than the previous two. Each scene is interesting, unusual and vivid. The characters are evolving in realistic ways, while still maintaining their individuality. Ms Andrews obviously has more ideas than she knows what to do with, so there are multiple plot threads, but each is tidied up by the end, with just enough dangling to make you passionately anticipate the next installment.

Joy of Vegan Baking The Compassionate Cooks Traditional Treats & Sinful Sweets
by
Co Patrick Goudreau
Mary Abercrombie
, November 30, 2008
This is THE best cookbook I have used. Period. All the ingredients are readily available, the instructions are very clear and easily understood, and (best of all) everything I have made using it, has turned out perfectly. Considering that I am a novice in the kitchen, that is saying something! This is not a cookbook for anyone trying to diet (and does not make that assertion) but is a collection of recipes for celebrations and special times. The author has sprinkled little essays throughout the book, including a history of "the dessert", and how they were not intended for everyday. So, don't expect any calorie counting or nutritional breakdown in these recipes. That being said, there are also non-dessert baking recpies too. Breads and rolls and biscuits and scones... All beautifully presented in full color photos with excellent instructions. Another benefit to this cookbook: for each chapter, she provides a list of tips and pointers, including things like: "if your dough does not rise, try this" or "if your crust is too sticky, try that". All of which, I really appreciated since many of these recipes are things I had never attempted before. So, to sum up... Thanks to "The Joy of Vegan Baking" I have produced flawless pies, scones, lemon bars, cookies, and cupcakes (that are still being requested at work whenever there is a birthday) which will satisfy even the most die-hard baked-goods aficionado, as well as fool any non-vegan friends.

The Uspc Guide to Bandaging Your Horse
by
Susan E. Harris
Mary Abercrombie
, November 18, 2008
I have had horses for years but have always had to rely on others for wrapping and bandaging. Luckily, they were not needed very often. However, this year I decided it was time to get down to business and learn for myself. As with all of Harris' books, the illustrations and instructions are concise and easy to follow. Not only does this book instruct you on the different types, purposes, and materials used for bandaging, but there are also product suggestions, instructions for making your own, as well as illustrations for how to store your bandages. The chapter on leg health is also very helpful in giving you an understanding of why, when, and with what, we should bandage. Susan Harris also emphasizes the importance of correct bandaging (poor bandaging can be more harmful than not bandaging at all) and the need to have an expert assist you until you are proficient. With this book, I feel I have a much clearer understanding of the mechanics of bandaging and have much more confidence. This book also gives me a better idea of my own abilities and when it would be better left to my vet or instructor. All in all, an excellent book, lots of very good information at a terrific price, and I highly recommend it for any horse person, young or old.
