Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. If Ken Kesey and Gabriel Garcia Marquez had collaborated on a book while shacked up in a cabin near Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain, this is the book they would have written. Stunning. Genuine. I was recommending and gifting this book before I'd ever finished. Doyle understand that the coast is a hard place to live and make a living, but there is magic in the struggle and solitude (yes, even god-awful early mornings to take care of cows or head out to sea). The characters are uniquely lovely, mistaken, broken, and fitted together in a story mosaic that's tough to put down. I'll be going back and back to this book forever.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
by
Stieg Larsson

This is the best book of the decade for me, though I was equally satisfied with The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest. Larsson was able to write a fast paced crime novel that contains a wealth of politics, humor, history, and intelligence. All of this is secondary to the fact that Larsson has created the most extraordinary heroine of all time in the character of Lisabeth Salander: a character who does more to turn female stereotypes on their heads than any other woman written in the last ten years. Maybe more. I recommend this book, all the books, with great enthusiasm. As many people have said in print and online, the only disappointment is that there will be no more books by Stieg Larsson; a tremendous loss to book lovers everywhere.
