In the Heart of the Sea
by
Nathaniel Philbrick

, November 18, 2015
Winner of the National Book Award in 2000, this is the incredible story of how the whaling ship Essex was attacked by an enormous sperm whale in 1819. Crew members were forced to abandon ship and attempt to survive at sea for 90 days on whatever provisions they could quickly load onto tiny whaleboats. In addition to being a brutally enlightening story about the specifics of whale hunting, this tale is more about survival. Faced with lack of water, bad weather and starvation (and ultimately cannibalism), only eight men survived the ordeal. Twenty-one men had originally sailed out of Nantucket -- which, at the time, had been the whaling capital of the world. The sinking of the Essex was Herman Melville's inspiration for Moby Dick. Ron Howard adapted this story into a feature film scheduled for release in late 2015.

San Miguel
by
T Coraghessan Boyle

Historical fiction can be tricky to plausibly create, but T. C. Boyle is the master. After finishing The Women, I couldn't wait to dive into San Miguel. Two completely different tales -- both utterly convincing and satisfying. San Miguel was especially compelling knowing that these characters were based on the lives of little-known individuals. I'm so glad I learned their story through Boyle's vivid and authentic narration.
