Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Dear Dragon: A Pen Pal Tale
by
Josh Funk
gerin123
, September 03, 2016
Josh Funk has done it again. His tale of two pen pals, one human, one dragon, is a friendship all elementary school age kids will love to read about. It makes for a great read aloud by parents, grandparents or teachers. And in usual Funk style the humor is great. I highly recommend this book.

I highly recommend Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast. This rhyming book is a great read aloud for your own kids or students. As a teacher librarian, I am always looking for good rhyming books to share with my students. This is one of them. The accompanying illustrations by Brendan Kearney are humorous and colorful. Buy this book, you won't regret it. Kids will love to read it over and over again.

All the Summer Girls
by
Meg Donohue
gerin123
, January 01, 2014
Looking for a book to get you out of the doldrums of the bleak East Coast weather? Meg Donohue's "All the Summer Girls," will give you a blast of New Jersey shore sunshine. Her three main characters, friends from elementary school days, are well-crafted. Kate, Dani and Vanessa are three twenty-somethings following very different career paths. Kate is a lawyer in Philly, Dani is a wannabe novelist living in San Francisco, while Vanessa is a stay at home NYC mom who wants to return to the art world. This is a quick and enjoyable read; yes it is chick-lit which I usually disdain, but there is also a bit of a mystery involving Kate's twin brother's death, that makes for a page turner. If you are yearning for the return of warmer weather, have ever been to the Jersey shore and like friendship stories, this book is for you!

Bird
by
Zetta Elliott and Shadra Strickland

Bird by Zetta Elliott is a beautifully written book. The main character is a young boy who faces a lot of obstacles in his life, but uses his love of drawing to help him survive the bleakness of his surroundings. I would recommend this book for both girls and boys, aged 8 to 12. Like the Langston Hughes poem, "Dreams," the main character's life is " like a broken-winged bird that cannot fly" but I would love for you to read Elliott's debut book to see how Mekhai manages to fix his problems. Beautifully drawn pictures by Shadra Strickland add to the charm.

She Loved Baseball: The Effa Manley Story
by
Audrey Vernick
gerin123

She Loved Baseball:The Effa Manley Story by Audrey Vernick is a great read. Manley fought for the rights of the Negro League players to get into the Baseball Hall of Fame; was an early feminist who never took "no" for an answer. The lively illustrations by the great Don Tate only add to the book's wonderful story. I would recommend this book for girls, aged 8 to 12 and even for adults who want to learn more about this great unheralded female baseball manager and humanitarian.

Wonder
by
R. J. Palacio

As a middle school librarian, my students and I loved R.J. Palacio's novel. Every teen would benefit from reading this great book. The characters are well-written, the theme of anti-bullying is more important now than ever. Highly recommend.
