Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Number Devil A Mathematical Adventure
by
Hans M Enzensberger

, August 19, 2008
Can you believe it? A book about mathematics that can be read as a bedtime story! I have read this aloud to my three children numerous times as they grew up. When they got old enough to read, they read it themselves. Our copy is now worn and well loved; my children are all in high school and college and they have all done well in mathematics. This book is a great gift to yourself, your family and your children.

Year of the Boat Beauty Imperfection & the Art of Doing It Yourself
by
Lawrence Cheek
stephreg
, August 10, 2008
This autobiographical tale will have you chuckling and wincing at the same time as Cheek explores with honesty and humor the joys and frustrations of boat building and the reflections of these on himself and his relationships. If you share this mad passion, this passion to build and sail a boat, read this book first. Cheek tells you little about boat building; but he does tell you what it means to be a boat builder.

Working with Routers
by
Editors of Fine Woodworking
stephreg
, July 30, 2008
This collection of 25 articles from Fine Woodworking has sections on router basic, bits and cutters, router joinery, router jigs and router-based machines, router tables and template routing. While a few of the articles are targeted to the beginner -- like "No-Frills Router Table", "Get the Most from your Router Table", and "Bench-Mounted Router Table" -- many are targeted to advanced woodworkers. "Turn a Router into a Joint-Making Machine", "The Ultimate Router Table", and "Make your Own Dovetail Jig" all require the skills of serious woodworkers. Like everything from Taunton Press, they are all well written and even the weekend woodbutcher will enjoy daydreaming over this volume.

Selecting & Using Hand Tools New Best Wo
by
Fine Woodworking

If you like Mario Rodriguez and his straightforward writing style, then this volume is a bonanza: Mario has five of the articles contained herein. Dig out your rusty old backsaw and try out his technique to turn it into a fine dovetail saw ("Soup up a Dovetail Saw"). And when it gets close to Christmas, your birthday, or father's day, go over his "Shop on the Go" for excellent suggestions on tools that everyone woodworker should have. I leave my copy of this volume out nearly all the time. Just looking at it reminds me to get into my shop and do some woodworking.

Working with Tablesaws: The New Best of Fine Woodworking
by
Editors of Fine Woodworking

, July 26, 2008
This is an excellent collection of 25 articles from Fine Woodworking that include product reviews, safety articles, techniques and a wide range of jig and fixture projects from simple to complex. "A Tablesaw Sled for Precision Crosscutting" itself is worth the price of the book. It was my first project from this book and I now can't imagine how I ever did woodworking without it. "Tablesaw Kickback" gave me an increased understanding of safety and changed how I use my saw. "Tablesawn Dovetails" is my next project. If you own a tablesaw and are not yet a master craftsman, buy this book.
