Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

A blast of a book. I have recommended and given this book away to many a friend--because it is like sharing a batch of cookies. It is funny, sexy and completely addictive. Okay, maybe cookies aren't funny or sexy--but the book is yummy.

Team of Rivals The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln
by
Goodwin, Doris Kearns
dw

We need more heroes in this world--how wonderful it was to discover a lion-hearted, compassionate, forward-thinking, ego-less, highly evolved hero in Abraham Lincoln. He was even more amazing than I had ever known. His team was equally interesting, if not as super human. Prior to this book I had never been able to finish (or barely start) a biography. It helps that Doris Kerns Goodwin is an artist in her writing--showing how biographies can read like novels instead of lengthy dull and lifeless works. Now I am addicted to learning more about historical figures. I cannot recommend this book enough.

If you ride horses--this is a terrific, easy to understand guide in using dressage to help your horse be more enjoyable to work with. I love how unsnooty Jane Savoie is about honoring the commonalities in all disciplines. For the dressage enthusiast--the second book in this series is wonderful too.

Last Time I Was Me

Fabulous book that is at times heartbreaking and most other times hilarious to the point you may want to wear diapers you'll be laughing so hard. Her characters (especially the women) are so rich in quarky details that they make you want to voyeur into their lives a little longer to see what crazy thing they will do next! My only negative comment is the bad guys are a little one dimensional. Other than that Cathy Lamb's books are the best thing to come along in women fiction for a while.
