What Light Can Do Essays on Art Imagination & the Natural World
by
Robert Hass

A must read for people interested in expansive thinking and great writing about a variety of subjects...imagine john jeremiah sullivan if he lived in a stone cottage for twenty years. I love this book and look forward to rereading it someday.

Ermine in Czernopol
by
Gregor Von Rezzori, Philip Boehm, Zadie Smith

I feel a strong trust in the new york review of books anthology and this is no let down. Von Rezzori has a great light touch with a swirling band of characters starting with philosophizing children in the ethnographically styled fictional city of Czernopol. I think he is a genius.

Maggie Nelson is such a gifted thinker and her writing reflects a distinctive gift to readers: logical, academic, intelligent ideas in a poetic package. My book of the year.

Woolgathering

Patti Smith

This is a delicious little volume of memories. When I was holding it while reading I had a sense that it was a book of magic. Of course the Patti Smith fans are deep but this would be a good gift that introduces her to people less familiar.

In the Garden of Beasts Love Terror & an American Family in Hitlers Berlin
by
Larson, Erik
ruth-ida
, September 20, 2011
This is the once a year book for me that is so good I cherish it instead of reading it all in one weekend. Larson has masterful touches in introducing bits of information and delving back in to the same subject a little later. The subject of an American family in 1930's Berlin is chilling and fascinating because Larson includes the good, bad and the ugly of human behavior. This is a great choice for a gift for any history lover.

Roast Chicken & Other Stories

this was a must for my collection. the short essay that precedes the recipes often has some of the best tips and ideas. i'm giving it as a gift to someone that really likes liver, marrow, and kidneys. me, not so much. but the book works on many other levels for my cooking.

Gunns Golden Rules Lifes Little Lessons for Making It Work
by
Tim Gunn
ruth-ida
, November 15, 2010
A zesty quick read by a writer that is not afraid to put a burr under the saddle of rude people-many of whom happen to be famous. I wouldn't call this a highly crafted piece of writing but I enjoyed my time with it.

Morrison's voice is so strong. i hesitate to give it 5 stars because i'm still reeling from the genius that is "A Mercy" which is too good for words.

Week at the Airport
by
Alain De Botton
ruth-ida
, October 26, 2010
This is a charmer. De Botton doesn't lack depth in his analysis but he wisely keeps things moving right along. It is a short read and filled with lovely color images. This would make a thoughtful little gift for anyone that likes to think about-obviously-airports but also about other travelers and why they have so much luggage.

The best book of the last decade because it is sparse yet powerful, haunting, challenging and most of all because it will stand the test of time.

Polidori is a genius. This is exactly the type of book that once it is sold out, and not reprinted, people will be clamoring for it and wondering why they didn't buy it when it came out. gorgeous. great gift for lovers of architecture, history and of course photography.

Sisters Antipodes
by
Jane Alison
ruth-ida

This isn't a book I lingered over instead finishing it in a little over a day including a very late night. I saved the last chapter for when I woke up in the morning. There are a few passages so good I wanted to flip the previous page back and experience it again or notate them and save them for myself and others...but I kept on moving forward knowing that I will have to re-read the whole thing. Usually I don't go back to a book but I just finished another fine memoir, Kafka Was The Rage by Anatole Broyard, and I had exactly the same feeling. I'm going to shelve them together.

Red Leather Diary Reclaiming a Life Through the Pages of a Lost Journal
by
Lily Koppel and Florence Wolfson Howitt
ruth-ida
, November 27, 2008
This is a book that while I was reading I was thinking of who I could give it to next. That doesn't come off like a compliment but what I mean is that I thought off my special auntie who\ I share titles with and my friend who loves vintage clothing, and on and on... Lily Koppel has written a great first book.

Peaches & Daddy A Story of the Roaring Twenties the Birth of Tabloid Media & the Courtship That Captured the Heart & Imagination
by
Michael Greenburg
ruth-ida
, November 27, 2008
Fast read. I really thought about this book when I wasn't near it to scoop it up and read on into the night. It was a short love affair really....this is a good read for people that love whack jobs and American history. I do. Peaches was such a riveting tragic sexy sicko. And Daddy--hard to say but I know who I have in mind to play him in the movie version. I won't ruin it for you but it isn't Sam Shepard I can tell you that...
