Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Way We Work Getting to Know the Amazing Human Body

We saw originals of the pages of this soon-to-be-released book at a remarkable traveling exhibit of the Norman Rockwell Museum, "The Art Of The Book," a extensive showcase of the creative resourcefulness of David Macaulay, when the exhibit was hosted by The Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis, Tennessee. We attended the lecture that was in May 2008 -- David Macaulay, in person, talking about his life and work as an author/illustrator, followed by a book signing session -- and have been eagerly awaiting, and happily discussing with an extraordinary variety of people, the upcoming debut of this anatomy tome, "The Way We Work." Ever so pleased that Powell's Books sells books by David Macaulay, and will be holding a book signing event at one of its stores!

Rome Antics
by
David Macaulay

On March 1, 2008 we spent Family Day at The Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis, Tennessee. Not only did we view and enjoy "The Art Of The Book," as this travelling museum exhibit showed us the stories of David Macaulay's creative process and procedures in bringing his experiences, exceptional tales, and excitingly diverse art work to the book format, but we also sat in the front row, mesmerized by David Macaulay as he spoke about his upcoming release, "How Your Body Works." During the book signing that followed, Jason presented his newest choice, "Rome Antics" -- an addition to his own collection of Macaulay's work, begun in early childhood -- to the amiable author and illustrator. As they discussed the times that Macaulay lived in Rome, and his understanding of the history and architecture of Rome, past and present, Macaulay inscribed this marvelous and enchanting book to Jason, and knowing Jason's history as a victorious warrior who continues to face difficult physical challenges, drew an intricate sketch on this bright red page, placing Jason's name within the top of the arch. Macaulay's thoughtful gesture to our wonderful son, brought us great joy, and later, as we experienced this extraordinary book (take note, you do not just read the words and look at the illustrations, you become a participant in the story of the trip of the homing pigeon on task in Rome, as you are behind the pigeon's eyes, living the decisions of his trip in Rome), we realized that Macaulay added to our learning -- early Romans added specific letters to structures that they built, too -- now, it is your turn, purchase this book from Powell's Books, and determine why!
