Dominant Animal Human Evolution & the Environment
by

very good, comprehensive coverage of the the current state of environmental issues. there is a good deal of overlap with other enviro books out there now, but very good for people new to the topic, and still worth checking out for people who are familiar with all the general info.

Beyond Civilization Humanitys Next Great Adventure
by
Daniel Quinn
aunt dracula
, October 22, 2008
This was an interesting, if somewhat scattered book. Quinn covers a lot of different topics, and makes some leaps of logic that are highly suspect. Nonetheless, he brings up some ideas that are definitely worth examination.

You Cant Win
by

This book encapsulates a lot of what went into the yet-to-come Beat movement. Sort of explains what it meant at that time to opt-out of the expected lifestyle and join the groups of bums, grifters, and scam-artists. This is entertaining if you simply want to read a good caper, but also if you want to read about pre-Beat underground ideology.

Black Swan The Impact of the Highly Improbable
by
Nassim Nicholas Taleb
aunt dracula
, September 28, 2008
This book presents some compelling arguments for changing the way we typically think about large-impact events. N.N. Taleb explains how certain ways of characterizing events may lead to flawed conclusions. If you can get past Taleb's sometimes overwhelming arrogance, this book has a lot to offer.

Safety Of Objects

These stories are dark, and all the more disturbing because the characters are not absurd parodies. If you enjoy the work of Todd Solondz (Welcome to the Dollhouse, Palindromes), this is a must-read. The characters are too close to being real people for you to condemn, but their actions may make you cringe more than once.

this is my favorite fiction book of all time. mccullers expertly (compassionately?) weaves together the lives of seemingly disparate characters. the ending is incredible!

Shock Doctrine the Rise of Disaster Capitalism
by
Naomi Klein
aunt dracula
, September 26, 2008
This is my new favorite nonfiction book! I don't know that I've ever read as important and relevant a book as this one. The depth of information Klein presents is incredible, and the book never drags despite its length. This book summarizes a perspective that is prevalent, but rarely enunciated in such clear terms. Awesome!!!

great book!! very interesting interviews from a wide variety of perspectives. generally, this book consists of an investigation of the politics surrounding the creation of art and music, but addresses topics at all levels of this process. very readable too!
