The Epicure's Lament
by
Kate Christensen

The main character Hugo is loveable, irreverant, and way over confident in his skills as a lover, cook, and expert on the rules of social engagement. He has a way of winning the reader over even with his nastiest of treatment of well meaning family members including his ex wife. This is a truly entertaining read. It is witty, clever, laugh-out-loud funny and has elements of sarcastic wit along with the proper social graces of the most well mannered east coast family you know. It is full of surprises. Kate Christensen is a gifted writer, though I have definitely preferred some of her novels over others. I have to say that this one is my favorite and The Great Man is my second favorite.
