Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. The Drunken Botanist: The Plants That Create the World's Great Drinks
by

Amy Stewart has compiled a wealth of information in this small, but usefull book!!! Just glancing through it the first thing that caught my eye was "Douglas Fir" on page 243........ this is about the efforts of Stephen McCarthy, a distiller right here in Oregon, to make a liquor from our majestic state tree. Amy has included a very well organized list of so many other plants that we can use in alcohol. The list is alphebetical from Agave to Wheat .....then goes on to discuss more obscure sources of alcohol such as Banana,Cassava, and even Monkey Puzzle(which I have always called Monkey Tail Tree). In Part II she discusses the infussion of herbs and spices, flowers, nuts, and the like into the alcohol. Part III is about going into the garden to create the cocktails using the fresh herbs, flowers, berries, etc...... There is one final note..... Amy Stewart has a line of plants based on this book!! "The Drunken Botonast" Herb Collection. One for Whiskey Sours, one for Simple Syrups, and one for Rum drinks. I already have the simple syrup collection planted in my back yard!!

I haven't seen this book yet, but this sounds like an awesome idea. I am getting this one for a friend of mine and I can't wait to see this book and his face when he gets it!!
