Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

That Rabbit Belongs To Emily Brown
by

Now that I have a young daughter, I am very sensitive to the fact that there seem to be very few books that give girls central, exciting main roles. All the books from my childhood that I loved, like The Cat in the Hat and The Places You'll Go, to name just a few, have a boy as the main. If a girl is let in at all, she is either a rather silent princess or she plays a quiet, listener. Now, I want my daughter to be able to imagine that she can have an exciting life in which she plays center stage. Emily Brown is one of the few books I have found in which a girl takes serious center stage without being a princess or a mermaid. Unfortunately, I did find the story and the manner in which it is written a bit trite. But the creative drawings of Emily and her Rabbit deep sea diving and exploring space go a ways to make up for that.

Herb, the Vegetarian Dragon

I love this book! Not only for its message of vegetarianism being something more than simply eating vegetables rather than meat, but for its beautifully vibrant illustrations. Though the moral message, I am sure, is lost on my 15 month old daughter, the detail of the magnificent pictures is not. She loves each page as she searches for the purple and yellow long-tailed birds stirring pots of vegetable stew and the mice handing leeks to Herb as he adds a dash of pepper....

Katie Morag & the Dancing Class

This is a beautifully illustrated storybook. It is suitable for small children, as well as children up to about 10 years old I would imagine. My 15 month old daughter enjoys having it read to her. Mostly she loves the watercolour illustrations that depict in detail a Scottish island village. The sea and harbour are full of life - fishing boats, seals, ducks, sea gulls. The story is also nice and will appeal to boys and girls alike. Katy Morag is full of mischief and adventure!

Hairy Maclary Five Lynley Dodd Stories

This is an excellent book for small children (and parents reading to small children)! My 15 month old daughter loves it and shrieks with delight at each page. The rhyming text is clever, funny and sunny. The pictures are full of surprises. It is one of the few books I have not yet tired of reading (every night!). Really, who wouldn't love a dog that is "bumptious and bustly, bossy and bouncy and frisky and hustly"!?
