Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Women of Spirit Stories of Courage from the Women Who Lived Them
by
Katherine Martin
susan beth
, March 30, 2009
Rarely have I read such honest, inspirational stories of women who, one way or another, often through tremendous obstacles, have achieved their dreams. I was delighted to see that SARK, one of my favorite authors, was included in the anthology, as were Julia Butterfly Hill and Joan Borysenko, Ph.D., truly pioneers in their respective fields. But also included were "ordinary" women made extraordinary by their commitment to a cause, such as eradicating sweatshops or nuclear power plants. They all embody the spirit of "Yes, we can" and through remembering their stories, I will always be reminded that "Yes, I can", too.

Knitting for Good A Guide to Creating Personal Social & Political Change Stitch by Stitch
by
Betsy Greer
susan beth
, February 09, 2009
The overarching message in this book: no act of kindness or subversion is too small to change the world. Greer recounts how her journey from knitting as personal pastime morphed into knitting as social activism, and encourages all knitters to find their do-good niche through the craft. Knitting for Good has shown me a way to take my knitting out into the world, to help others heal from disease and tragedy, and I can't wait to get started.

Wheel of Change Tarot
by
Alexandra Genetti

, February 09, 2009
Working with The Wheel of Change Tarot is like taking an unlikely journey through time and space. Pottery shards, oil refineries, musical instruments, and animals juxtapose with geometric shapes, flora, and vibrant colors, challenging your perceptions and opening up intuitive avenues you hardly knew existed. This is a deck perfect for deep inner soul work, and its companion book is a guide to the rich symbolism contained in every card.

Mindful Knitting Inviting Contemplative
by
Tara Jon Manning
susan beth
, December 13, 2008
As a long-time knitter who has studied Buddhism for several years, I can truly say that Tara Jon Manning has melded the practice of the two beautifully. I've never been able to sustain a sitting meditation practice, but I think I will be able to using her method. I'm eager to try!
