Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Creutzdfeldt-Jakob disease, better known as Mad Cow disease, is definitely a crummy way to go. Just ask Cameron, a failing high-school student who can't keep a job flipping burgers or get the head cheerleader to notice him. Just when you think this book couldn't get any more depressing, Cameron is visited by a punk-rock angel who has a very important message for him. There's a cure to Mad Cow disease, he just needs to find Dr. X who holds the secret! On his journey, he takes with him a hypochondriac hispanic dwarf, Gonzo, and later meets a talking lawn gnome who turns out to be the Norse god, Balder. There are many more crazy occurances in this book, but you'll just need to read it to find out!

The Hunger Games: Hunger Games 1

"Hunger Games", the first of a trilogy (book two entitled "Catching Fire", and book three due out August 2010) was by far my favorite book of the decade. I don't normally plow through a book in one evening, but this one I did (same goes for it's sequal). Suitable for mature 12-year-olds and up, Katniss Everdeen is what I consider to be an interesting new take on a female role model. She struggles with what any human would go through to fight for survival and the welfare of her loved ones. I highly recommend this trilogy to anyone and everyone!
