Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Aspergirls Empowering Females with Asperger Syndrome
by

I purchased this book because there was some suspicion that a close female relative might have Aspergers but most of the information out there seems to focus on boys and their symptoms. It turns out that girls can have Aspergers too, and the way they present to the world is different enough from how boys look that they often go undiagnosed, and therefore, unaided in dealing with a challenging neurological condition. This book is incredibly helpful in understanding how it feels to be an "Aspergirl" and what caregivers can do to help Aspergirls reach their full potential. It is very readable book and chock full of quotes from girls and women with Aspergers that illustrate the points the author is making. So far the best book I have found on Aspergers and girls and a real lifesaver for those looking for answers!

Big Flavor Grill No Marinade No Hassle Recipes for Delicious Steaks Chicken Ribs Chops Vegetables Shrimp & Fish

This book is great for any type of grilling. (The author prefers charcoal but I have made the recipes with a gas grill.) The basic concept is that rather than marinating and attempting to infuse flavors BEFORE cooking you season your meat, fish, etc. very simply before grilling, grill it, and THEN toss it with flavorful ingredients (herbs, spices, chilies, chutneys, sauces etc.)to achieve very fresh tasting and delicious combinations. This works really well. There are lots of options and easy to use recipes for meats, fish, shellfish and vegetables. This book has totally changed the way I think about seasoning and led to some excellent meals. Highly recommended if you like easy-to-make, flavorful food that gets you out of the kitchen on hot days.

This book is unique and wonderful. Our whole family--parents and children alike--has enjoyed it for its quirky sense of humor, great drawings, and pages filled with thousands of imaginative and fun details (new ones to discover each time we read). With all this going on the plot itself is a bit beside the point at times and that may be the book's weakness. Still, highly recommended!
