Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Enchanted Forest 01 Dealing With Dragons

I recall the Enchanted Forest Chronicles, especially this first one, with such fondness that I couldn't resist checking some out when I went to the library today. Cimorene is such a fun character and it is always satisfying to see everything turn out for the best after clever thinking and some hard work.

Enchanted Forest 03 Calling On Dragons

Dealing with Dragons will always be my favorite in this series, but this one is still enjoyable. How could you not love a book with a rabbit named Killer who can't keep himself out of trouble? The only thing about this book that makes me hesitate to re-read it is that it is a middle book, and leads very strongly into the next.

Girl With A Pearl Earring

The descriptions were beautiful and evocative, although the main character Griet was quite cold. Now that I think back on it, calling her the main character is not quite accurate. Vermeer's art and artistic process are really the main focus and receive the most attention. Regardless, the book is not a hard slog by any means, and I thoroughly enjoyed my re-read.

Far inferior to the first one, which had the added bonus of a cipher running along the bottom of the pages. Entertaining story and a challenge! While we get to see some happy endings in this book, they're not worth the time spent reading it.

Oh, Animorphs. Good times. Unsettling, awkward, philosophical good times. This is not so much one of those, though, especially since it is only the middle part of a trilogy that I'd never seen as separate books prior to this. It's definitely a sub-par addition to the series.

I got this book for free at Comic-Con a few years ago but only recently got around to it. It was a very quick read, both because of its length and its style. It's not the most sophisticated story, but it's very entertaining and the plot is well thought-out. The characters are engaging, and I think I'll try the other books in this series.
