Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Ministry for the Future

This is an overwhelming, mind-blowing, far-sighted novel that takes you to the edge of our near future where climate change is killing places over the planet. It very distinctly portrays all types of disasters, eco-terrorists who are seeking to force change, the potential role of a single UN sub agency to demand action and use aggressive strategies to force change from those most conservative. Yes, it rambles on in parts, but this is an example where the whole is greater than the parts. I feel like I have seen the future and we will have to be dragged there.

A Dance with Dragons: Song of Ice and Fire 5
by
George R R Martin

Am torn between 4 and 5 rating- finished my 1000 pages in record time realizing that the story arc are still moving in almost real time so that the reader is not going to see a neat conclusion at all but multiple cliffhangers in the last 200 pages and many teasers for the next volume. I was pleased to see some characters resurrected from apparently dead states in "Feast for Crows" but then I finished this book with no update on great subplot involving Little Fingers from the last book as well! Martin does a great job in explaining the complexity of ruling versus the short lived joys of conquering foreign cities through the Daenrys character. Also he continues to showcase how war changes the characters of so many of his players, in ways both heroic and venal

Incredibly moving, hard to put down narrative that takes you through so many traumatic facets of the slave/newly freed experience in southern America. You will not forget this story...truly the best book of the decade in my opinion

Ordinary Injustice How America Holds Court
by

The first two words say it all; and probably should be larger in Graphic treatment then the sub-heading. "IN -Justice" is the day-to day result of years of over-crowded court systems and bureacratic appointments, plus under-funding and a lack of visibility compared to other causes that receive far more press.
