Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

A Path to Life's Fullness: A New Perspective on the Teachings of Jesus
by
Manuel J. Costa M. a. Lmft
Kathleen McMullen
, March 05, 2013
What could Jesus possibly have to say about my life and our world, with all its complexities? For some, he has been left in Sunday school or kept in Sunday church. He has nothing to help one live with compassion and energy in our increasingly diverse world and a world that is endangered by global warming and violence. Manuel Costa’s book is surely “A Path to Life’s Fullness: New Perspectives on the Teachings of Jesus.” Jesus, he says, shows us that every new circumstance needs new paths and we cannot depend on a “precision of commandments or rules, nor the weight of pronouncements...: But we must be firmly tethered to the God-within whose presence in myself and others is always faithful, demanding, yet compassionate. Use this book for reflection by personal journaling with the questions at the end of each chapter or by sharing this with a partner or group. You will find yourself challenged, encouraged, and deeply joyful over the fullness you will find in Jesus teachings. Themes include: interiority, inclusiveness, the value of outcasts, the primacy of love, death and rebirth, actions not just words, inner authority, forgiveness, and prayer.

Untie the Strong Woman Blessed Mothers Immaculate Love for the Wild Soul
by
Clarissa Pinkola Estes
Kathleen McMullen
, January 30, 2013
This is not only the best book I read this year, but one of the most liberating I've ever read. She tells the story - The Blessed Mother, Virgen of Guadalupe, comes for the poor, for those who are needy, for those who are so often shoved aside. I love knowing that for all the times I've felt poor, needy - and need the reminder to look out for others as She would do.

Swimming the Eel
by
Raab, Zara
Kathleen McMullen
, February 17, 2012
I just got this book after hearing Zara read. It is a treasure for anyone who loves the West and its stories. She tells the stories of her family, back into the 1800's, but, even more than that, strikes a depth as deep as the deepest swimming holes in the Eel River of the North Coast.
