Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

The Chronology of Water: A Memoir
by
Lidia Yuknavitch

Read this book. Everyone on the planet who has ever been hurt or hurt someone else (so... everyone) should read this book. The ugliness in her life and in our world is brought vividly to life in her incredible writing. She pulls no punches, she tells no fairy tales, and knows that healing only comes through forgiveness and love. But she doesn't sound like Mary Poppins, she sounds like Roseanne Barr without the agenda. Foul-mouthed truth-telling that can redeem the world. Read it now.

Unless

Shields, Carol

This book is fantastic. Shields is such a great writer, and she describes the estrangement from her child and her sadness at the state of the world with such a light touch that it really sneaks up on you. One of my all-time favorite books.

Eating Animals
by
Jonathan Safran Foer

Warning: this book may turn you into a vegetarian. Foer takes the hyperbole and touchy-feely out of the question of eating meat and explains why factory farming produces the worst meat in the worst possible way for the planet. And, oh yeah - almost all the meat available in the U.S. is factory-farmed. Now, to find a good vegetarian cookbook...

Prodigal Summer
by
Barbara Kingsolver

This is my favorite book by an incredible author. She seems to ask the same questions of her life that I do, and find ways to answer those questions that we can all use. The book explores the lives of several women who don't fit the mold. These women use science and compassion to make the difficult choices in their lives and remain true to themselves. These are women I want to be friends with. I must have bought a dozen copies of Prodigal Summer and given them to my friends.

Gathering Storm Wheel of Time 12
by
Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson

I have been following this series since the early 90s and this one was incredible. Maybe because it's been 4 years since the last one. Maybe because I know he died and we all wondered if we'd ever find out how it ends. But this book stands out as a great book on its own, as well as a welcome addition to the series - can't wait for the next one!

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life
by
Kingsolver, Barbara and Kingsolver, Camille and Hopp, Steven L.
bevula
, November 22, 2009
Not many authors could make moving to the country and eating almost nothing but local food sound like a fun family project. As we spend a crazy year with her family, we learn tons of useful and surprising information about the food the rest of us are buying at the supermarket. While there's no chance I'll be butchering my own turkeys anytime soon, this book almost makes me wish I had the option. Almost.

Girl Who Stopped Swimming
by
Joshilyn Jackson
bevula
, November 17, 2009
Joshilyn Jackson is the kind of writer we all dream of being. Every description contains scents and sounds and connections that leave the reader no choice but to become a part of the book. The plot of her book is compelling and sufficiently twisted, but the experience of living inside it is extraordinary.
